Subject: 4.7 Fuel Economy.....!

Hey, what kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with your 4.7 4WD Dakotas, anyway?

I just drove from Detroit to Rochester, New York and averaged about 14.5 mpg. Yuck! Tires are new and properly aired, the alignment is perfect, and I was in 2WD the whole way...at about 80 mph or so...

The window stickers claimed a figure of 18 or 19 highway for these things, what's the deal? Is anyone actually getting those numbers?

I've heard complaints from other 4.7 drivers about the mpg....

ALSO: what will improve the fuel economy of the 4.7? Does a K&N cold air intake and a chip to the computer improve it a whole lot? It's not that I'm cheap with gas, I just hate the actual hassle of having to stop and fill this truck up so often!!!

Thanks guys!

18 or 19 at 55mph!!! Once you go over that speed your mpg will drop. I've gotten as good as 19.5 going about 60mph. I get about 16 doing 80mph. I have a 4x2 though. Your truck weighs more than mine.

ahhh, that's a real bugger.....!

My recently-gotten-rid-of 2000 Chevy Blazer 4WD, with its crude batch-fired fuel-injection 4.2 V6 got over 20 or 21 mpg on the highway at these same speeds. I think it weighed roughly the same as my QC does...but it had much smaller tires.

Still - I guess I'm still curious - are there significant mpg gains to be made by installing the K&N high-flow cold air intake and tuning the engine management computer? This must have been discussed on this board many times already, I'll go back and check the archives, but if anybody has something relevant to the mpg issue to add, please do!!!

Again, thanks so much guys!

Put in an air intake of some sort and exhaust. I removed my fan today and it made a big diference. I now get about 17.6mpg at 75mph. And that is with 33's and 3.55 gears.

When I first got my truck I drove it real gingerly. I would drive 70 on the expressway. I would accelerate realy slowly and I would average 19.5 MPG. If I went to 75 it droped to 18MPG. When I went to driveing like a normal person and accelerateing at a brisker pace and driveing 80 MPH my MPG droped to about 16.5. I am sure that I could prob. get 21MPH if I accelerated real slowly and drove 55 MPH. I just can not keep my foot off the right pedal when I drive it!!!!

My overhead computer says I get 22mpg at 65 with a Quad Cab. I know that can't be right but that's what it says. 4.7 2wd auto with mods shown below.

The best I have seen is about 18mpg(mostly highway @ 70 mph) for the first couple months after I bought it and before I started adding mods then it just kept going down, down, down until I am at about 13-15mpg average. Over half of my daily commute is highway that I drive about 70-75mph, the rest of drive to work is stop-n-go for a few miles and unless the traffic is busy, I always accelerate briskly(I don't think I'll ever be able to take off slow since I added aftermarket intake, TB spacer and flowmaster exhaust). I took a camping trip to Old Forge last summer when truck had 5K on the odometer and had only flowmaster exhaust on and got about 15mpg @ 72mph(Cruise set for over an hour non-stop) on the highway and then another 20-30 miles of back roads @ about 55mph. I was expecting 18-20mpg since I used cruise control for 2/3 of the trip and was not thrilled with the 15mpg considering I have 3.55's and was mostly stock at that time.

I traded in a 99 RC 4x4 with V6 and a very long list of bolt-on mods in search of better mpg and power, and I found some hp but no mpg at all(Did not know about electric fan conversion at that time which would have helped mpg). Mileage was compareable or worse than my 4.7 so I have just resolved myself to the fact that I have bought a Dodge 4x4 and WILL NOT see a good MPG compared to most other brands of 4x4's no matter what I bolt-on or change. I can change my driving style and get a couple extra mpg but what fun is that? I'll just keep shelling out the $150 every month to drive the best truck I have ever owned. The 2WD is a different story from the threads I have been reading over the past 6 or 7 months and 5-speed or Auto makes little difference if driven the same.

Most 4x4's that I owned in the past averaged about 15-16 normal driving. That even included the '94 nissan 4x4 v6 that I owned some years ago. Tough truck but got worse milage than I get with my v8.

Who makes the electric fan conversion, and how much does that cost, roughly? That and the intake modifications seem like the biggest return for effort and money.

thanks!

Hey 2THEXTRM,

Did you go up to Stillwater Reservoir? Used to tow a bassboat up there for some of the finest smallmouth bass fishing that I've ever come across. Four pound average fish caught on top water lures, awesome tailwalking action! Great camping facilities, do it yourself, LOL. Used to go up in the winter also for the snowmobiling.

The mileage sucks on my 4.7L 4x4 also but it's like a little hotrod so WTH. If I lift it I'll probably change to 3.92's or lower so I'll probably be figuring by gallons to the mile, Ha-Ha!

I get an average of 19MPG in the Sierra-Nevada foothills of Northern California with MTBE in the gasoline (drops 2MPG).

I made 23.5MPG from Coos Bay, Oregon to Seattle, Washington, no MTBE. I also took off the tailgate on that stretch.

I got 23MPG going from our house to Edmonton and back at 100km/h (60MPH) with cruise on (200km trip) in min november.
I have a 2001 SLT+ CC 4X4, 31" tires and a 3.55LSD rear and part time 4X4.
This value was calculated because I filled up at a self serve gas station until the pump shut off, when I came back, I did the same thing.

I have no engine mods, and no mods which affect aerodynamics.
