CW,
I have noticed on the boards that you are DC tech. I had a question for you. FOr the past few months my truck (01 3.9L 4x4 Auto CC) has been having a "rattling" noise during idle only when the truck is in DRIVE. THe rattle goes away in all other gears. It also goes away when I give it gas. I have had it in for service and got the customary, there's nothing wrong. This weekend I was driving down the interstate and after driving at 70mph for an hour I was getting off and the truck dropped into 2nd gear by itself. Not sure if the two problems are related, but I think I need to take it in again. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

The rattling when in gear I would be willing to bet is a catalatic convertor. Climb under and give it a bang with your hand and see if it rattles. The down shifting.... If you haven't changed the trans oil in the last 30,000 miles I would change it and have the bands adjusted.

2001 RC 4.7 5sp 9.25" 3.92 LSD
Ported 68mm throttle body, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat. Electric fan Convertion, Awaiting HO cams.
Working on adjustable fuel pressure with return.

CW,
I hadn't thought to check the cat converter. I will look at that soon. The truck only has 12,000 miles on it so it shouldn't need a trans fluid change, but I will take it in and let them look at it. I appreciate your help! Thanks!

CW,
I had another question for you. Would the fact that the rattling I hear while in Drive is not occurring every time I get in the truck mean it isn't the cat. converter? It probably happens around 85% of the time. I am making an apt. tomorrow to have it looked at down at the local DC shop. Thanks.

No some cats need just the right vibration to rattle. Sometimes it is just off idle or at idle in gear. Seen it lots of times.
