Subject: Malfunctioning Multi-Spd Auto?

I was "racing around" on the fwy the other night... me in my Dak, my friend in his rice-rocket. I always take him 'til about 60-70, but he'll always leave me behind after that.

A few seconds after he pulled away, I looked at the speedo, and I was doing around 90. Just about then, I felt an abrupt loss-of-power (kinda like I was gettin' no spark) so as I began to pull over, I glanced again at my gauges and I was at almost 5,000 RPM!

A closer look uncovered the fact that I was in SECOND gear! Now I know that I couldn't have been in second for the whole ride (could I?), and it seems impossible that the gearshift lever slipped, but I'm wondering if this shifter is totally electronic, or is it cable-actuated (with the electronics in the trans itself)?

Can anyone tell me about how many "R's" I would be turning in second gear if I were doing 90 MPH (3.55:1).

This is kinda disturbing, cuz I don't know the redline of this engine, or how long I was doing 5,000 RPM.

Anyone experienced the 4.5-speed auto shifting on it's own? I hope I haven't shaved a few years off the life of my motor.

Now I watch my gear-selector indicator and my tach WAY more than I used to.

Broeheem; I've had the same "lever slip" happen on my 4.7 Auto 4x4 3 or 4 times. I've just "thrown the truck in "D" and taken off without ever double checking. I'm pretty sure at least twice I didn't get the lever engaged properly but the other 2 times I know it was "in gear" correctly.
Once it happened as I was taking off from a red light and I felt a clunk and saw the lever "click" into place out of the corner of my eye. Second time it did the same thing while I was making a right turn.
I'm going to mention it to the dealer next warranty servicing and see what they come up with.

How many revs? Can't say for sure, but when I had 31 inch tires the 2-3 shift would happen at 5500 RPM and about 75 mph. If you were in 2nd gear doing 90...ouch.

I think you're right about the gear lever slipping back from D to 2...It's fairly easy to end up on the "bump" between the two and have the PRND2L thing disply D. That's the only thing that I can think of...if you had been in 2nd the whole time you would have run into the rev limiter long before 90 mph. I just give mine a little nudge every time I put in in drive to make sure I'm in the right gear.

I'm not sure how the PCM figures out what gear you've selected.

I don't think so, either.

I'm sure that I couldn't have accidently knocked the lever in mid-flight. I've since tried, and it's just not possible.... you need to seriously pull the lever toward you before it'll allow you to pull it down into second gear.

It looks like it's a DC problem.

Oh, jeez.... ANOTHER problem - as if I haven't caused enough trouble with lowering it (but THAT's another post).

WAAAAAAH!

Had it happen once on the way to work, maybe about five miles from the house on the highway. One minute I'm cruising along at 55 then all of a sudden it downshifted by itself! Scared the crap outta me, but I figured that maybe somehow I didn't have it all the way in drive. Hasn't happened since, now every time I put it in drive I shake the shifter to make sure it's locked in drive.

Dunno, could this have been the governor kicking in?

Sounds like you bumped up against the rev limiter ! I wouldn't worry about 5000 rpm, redline is 6000 and mine sees 5500 regularly. Internal mass is much lighter in 4.7 than other mopar 8's and there's no pushrods to bend. Mine shifts imprecisely at the other end, I'll feel the detant for reverse but once in a while it doesn't go in. I shift back and forth and it catches. Guess I'll leave it alone, better off with the devil you know sometimes, wouldn't want it shifting like yours ! Maybe dealership can do something for you.

I have been cruising at 60 mph in my 2k Dak, and dropped it purposely into 2nd and nailed it, I had her up to 85 mph and the tach read 5500 rpm, I have 3;55 gears and the 4.7 motor. Then i put her in drive and rocketed home. It was a mexican tune up. LOL..Blow her out.

I don't know if this is the same problem, but I have a new 4.7L, Auto and twice since I got this vehicle, when I start it up, I can't get it into "full" gear. I know it is in some sort of gear because the car WILL move (slowly), but the RPM's are way up there. I've tried shifting or jiggling the shift lever and "no go". The only way to fix it seemed to be "flooring" it and then backing off. After that, everything works fine.

I've called the dealership and they knew nothing about it and without being able to recreate it, it would be hard to diagnose. I only have about 1800 miles on it and everything is great, but one of the times this happened while my wife was pulling away from the house and now she's scared to death to drive it (I know, some will say this is a blessing in disguise, BUT...).

Any help would be appreciated...

I was driving down the interstate this weekend and was getting off the highway goin up the ramp and all of a sudden I was doing 5000 RPM in Second gear! This was after driving around 50 miles at 70 miles an hour with no problems. I have been having a rattling at idle only when the truck is in Drive (not in any other gear) so with this most recent event I am going to take it in AGAIN (i have taken it in for the rattling once) and tell them to fix it while it is still under warranty.
