Subject: Pulling Codes?
IP: Logged

Message:
My check engine light comes on every once in awhile. The problem is that when I try to pull the codes using the key (on/off) techinique, it only shows the first code,(which is 12) and then just sits there. I know that it is supposed to show a 55 when the last code has been displayed. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this to work without spending $200 on a scan tool? By the way, I have a 1997 Dakota club cab 4x4, 5.2L Auto.

If all you're getting is a "12"...that's normal (No codes).

Here's the two ways for a '97 model:

OBTAINING DTC'S USING MIL LAMP

Cycle the ignition key On-Off-On-Off-On within 5 seconds.
Count the number of times the MIL (check engine lamp) on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the trouble code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual two digit trouble codes. An example of a flashed DTC is as follows:
Lamp flashes 4 times, pauses, and then flashes 6 more times. This indicates a DTC code number 46.
Lamp flashes 5 times, pauses, and flashes 5 more times. This indicates a DTC code number 55. A DTC 55 will always be the last code to be displayed. This indicates the end of all stored codes.
OBTAINING DTC'S USING VEHICLE ODOMETER

Cycle the ignition key On-Off-On-Off-On within 5 seconds.
After a short pause, the mileage shown on the vehicles digital odometer will be temporarily deleted. After this occurs, read the DTC number displayed on the odometer. Each two-digit number will be displayed with a slight delay between numbers.
A DTC number 55 will always be the last code to be displayed. This indicates the end of all stored codes. After code 55 has been displayed, the odometer will return to its normal mode.

If I understand correctly, since I am getting a 12, that means there are no codes and I shouldn't expect a 55 at the end. If so, is it normal for no codes to appear even though the check engine light is on?

Go to http://www.obdii.com/codes.asp

It will ask for the make of vehicle and then you need to enter the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble code): 12
I also have a 97 Dakota Club Cab 4x4.
My truck is doing the same thing, and a 12 means
Open or Shorted Condition in the evaporative purge solenoid control circuit.

From what I have been told it is an emissions problem. By the way how is your truck running?

And just to get things right a code 12 means that power has been lost to the PCM.
