Subject: Check Engine Light Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '99 5.2L Dakota CC that has been having "CEL" problems for the last 6 months.

These problems began after I had a remote starter and a dual exhaust put on my Dak...

The first time it happened was the day after I had my exhaust installed... however I took it to the dealer and they supposedly "fixed it".

Well months later, I am still getting a CEL. Most times it happens when using the remote start on my Viper 550 ESP alarm.

If I use the key, it generally doesn't happen (after I have cleared it removing the negative battery terminal trick), but as soon as I use the remote start... BAM... it is back.

Does anyone else have this problem and if so, what have you done about it?

I've asked the dealer to look at my sensors, but they never do... however today they replaced my spark plugs and wires and a few other things and the stupid light came back on before I even left their service bay (right after they closed for the day... MY LUCK!!!)

Grrrr.... hopefully someone can help me out there.

I have the same problem and don't know what to do. I only get it when I do the remote start. It also happens when I start the car with the key and then pull the key out with the engine still running then it happens.

Thanks for the response...

Now I am wondering... could my dual exhaust be the culprit?

I know that stock I had a single 3 inch pipe out the right side, but I had my exhaust converted to dual 2 1/4 inch pipes out the back...

Now the dealer mentions that my "back pressure" may not be enough and might be causing the problem.

Any thoughts out there?

BTW Horbedarn, what remote starter are you using?

I am using a Viper 550 ESP alarm w/ remote start. I had the brain replace a few months ago and the problem went away until recently.

Pretty weird stuff if you ask me...

DarkFury, It's your remote start! I'm having the same problem. The dealer told me on the newer DAK's he's been coming acrossed this problem. He gave me a name and number of a local shop that has some kind of fix. I'll let you know.

Well... My Dak was in the shop 3 times this week chasing down this CEL ghost...

As it turns out, the code poppin' up kept pointing to a misfire in the #1 cylinder...and after lookin' they found that the intake gasket was leaking.

I also had a busted water pump as well... so once they got both of those fixed and reprogrammed the computer, the CEL went away.

For now all is cool... but I don't think I have seen the last of the CEL.

I have a 2001 dakota with 4.7 and recently my CEL has come on and the thing is runnin very rough at idle and 15-1700 rpms. Error comes up as #3 cylinder misfire, but after changing all plugs and #3 coil, problems still exist. Can this be an injector issue?.
