 Subject: 22 gallon tank, only holds 17????

My sticker says I have the 22 gallon tank, but it never ever takes more than 17 at the pump, and I've ran it pretty low! whats up with that?

Sounds like you have always had a least 5 gallons of gas left in the tank when you filled up.
Carry a gas can with you when you get low on gas. Continue to drive until its just starts to run out of gas. Add gas can contents, then go fill up to see what capacity is.
Most fuel gauges are caliberated different. Yuurs may be indicating Empty prematurely.

I have heard that manufacturers calibrate the fuel guage to say empty when there are still a few gallons of gas in the tank so that you don't risk burning up the fuel pump. I ran my T/A to empty as I pulled into a gas station and I had to end up replacing the fuel pump a few weeks later so I am inclined to believe it.

My 2kDak is the same, 22 gallon tank, but when i fill her up 17 gallons. This is because of what Eric B. says is correct..

you could always siphon off the gas tank one sunny sunday afternoon for fun. Drain it dry.

Most I've put in mine is 19 gallons. I ran the computer on the overhead down to zero and drove it a little further.

The fuel lubricates the fuel pump and keeps it cool.
just fillup when the light comes on and you will be ok.
My 95 3.9 with 22 gal tank only takes 17 at fillup.
