The subject sounds kinda odd, but my fiancee's father introduced me to something I didn't even know about...the clay bar. This stuff is the sh!t! I may be the only goof that didn't know about this stuff, but evidently at any good auto store (you can't find it at places like Wal-Mart or such), you can buy a sort of clay that you use to clean your paint with. He (my fiancee's father) told me to run my hand over the paint job on my Dak, and I did....and there were lotsa little bumps on it from imperfections due to dirt, sap, etc. He then told me to grab the bottle of Meguiar's mist and wipe, spray it on just enough to wet the hood, and then run the bar of clay over it, kinda like I was washing it. (The mist and wipe keeps the clay from sticking to the truck...if you don't use the mist and wipe, the clay does stick, and then you have to clean it off.) Afterwards he took a cotton cloth, wiped the Meguiar's off, and told me to run my hand over it again. NOT a thing. Smooth as a baby's butt. :)

Works great as you've found out. I have found the Griots garage clay bar and speed shine to work really well. It took off the black paint overspray (from the wheel wells) that was on the fenders of my brand new almond dakota. You can check out their products at www.griotsgarage.com

If you want your truck to be as SMOOOOOOTH as glass this is the stuff to use. Meguires is good, but no Zaino ;)

Kota, it SHOULDN'T go through the clear coat...that's why I stick with Zaino. I trust that Sal, the owner, knows what he's doing.

I'm waiting 'till spring so I can do it to my new truck...hrm...shouldn't be but another 3 MONTHS!

Well I should point out 2 things. One, if you spray the Meguiar's Mist and Wipe on the paint, the clay is not sticking at ALL to the clearcoat...therefore it's not rubbing anything off. Even still, granted, I wouldn't use it all the time, but then again, this is not something I plan on doing EVERY wash...I'm talking once a month or two, to get rid of things like sap from trees, which will ALSO screw up the clearcoat. It did so on my last coat. I think that the sap would eat through the clearcoat much faster than anything else I could put on there. (Not counting such things as acid, belt sanders and the like. :)

Yeah, I myself was scratching my head on that one, but once I realized he meant to use it ONLY with a 'lubricant' I understood. Plus, the guy has been a Corvette salesman for near 20 years now, and has used it for that long, and BELIEVE me, if there was ANY bad side to using it, he would have gone on and on about it. He loves the stuff, so for me, that's enough. :)

OMG, always use it with a lubricant, I don't see how you can even in the slightest bit get it to work without it.

Just be sure you wax it real well afterwards, because these things take off EVERYTHING, meaning you will have no protection from things like sun, rain, sap, bird bombs, etc..

This brings up a question: How often do you all wax your truck?

I just waxed mine the day after I picked up my new Quad Cab. The next day, it rained. So that the day after it stopped raining, I decided to use Meguiar's Mist and Wipe to return the shine.

Now today, it's raining. Argh!

I really hate seeing the dry water spots on my truck because you know how hard it is to remove them once they are 'etched' into the clear coat.

Any tips on keeping your truck free of water spots?

Thanks.

Tim

A good coat of QUALITY wax will protect your truck's finish quite well. It will take AT LEAST 4 wash/waxes before you have filled all of the microscopic pores with wax.

What wax to use... no question about it. ZYMOL
( http://www.zymol.com/phihome.htm )
It has the very best wax in it such as white Carnauba and Montan waxes. It is actually an EMULSION that does not behave as a wax until it actually hits the air. As a bonus... it SMELLS great. (all natural oils/waxes/enhancers such as coconut)

Virtually all other so-called "car waxes" are petroleum-based and are applied ON the finish of your vehicle. (not INTO the finish)

After using ZYMOL for over a year, I can attest that my Dakota still "beads" after a couple months of salt-spray from winter roads. The finish on my Dak looks af it is "deep" or "thick"
(not just some silly shine that reflects until the next rainstorm)

I know a guy that has built a LIVING painting expensive cars and he measures his work with a YARDSTICK to see how far up he can see in the reflection.

Does the finish on your Dak appear to be 3-feet thick?

3 feet thick? I don't think so... My truck does shine, but that only last until the rain. I've noticed some water spots already and I'm quite disappointed that I'll have to gently wash the truck again.

The only wax product I have right now are from Meguiar. Didn't know of ZYMOL's great product. Unfortunately, the ZYMOL is going to have to wait for me.

I used to use Zymol, still got some hangin around to I think. I use it on my girlfriend's/parents cars once in a while now. It's actually some good stuff and I did get it from Costco (like a Sams club for you that don't know what a Costco is).

However, I've converted to Zaino, but Bruce is right, Zymol is some decent stuff.

Tim, any good wax should be able to keep those water drops beaded for a couple weeks at least. I've used walmart turtle wax, one coat on a girlfriend's 84 Pulsar and it beaded for a couple months.
