I am just learning to drive a manual trany car and had my first lesson last night in a freinds Ford Escort. I am not too bad for a beginer but have to remember to take my foot off the gas when pressing in the clutch to shift. Also, taking off from a dead stop is giving me a bit of trouble. I either stall(mostly) or burn out. I have to shift at around 3,000 rpm with that 4 banger so what do you guys shift at with the 3.9? 4.7? 5.2? 5.9?
I bet the whole burn out thing is alot worse with the lighter rear end and bigger motor.

My first truck was a 5-spd 89 Toyota 4-cyl. I bought that before I knew how to drive a stick, so I really had no choice. I remember sucking for a while but then I got okay. I would be fine until I got to an intersection where there were other cars around. I remember how pissed people used to get when I would tie up an intersection for a few stalls. haha.

My first vehicle was my Dak. I hadn't touched a stick much at all before I got my truck...took me but less than a week and I only killed it from a start a couple times, no grinding or anything during that time. A couple months later I can flawlessly shift on the fly. (FUK, I JUST SPILT CEREAL ALL OVER MYSELF TYPIN' THIS, damn..)

Anyways, I too am shifting around 2500 because of the weather conditions (ice/snow), but usually around 3000...but that's usually, you shift when/where and what your conditions are. You wouldn't be shifting at 2000 if you were racing something..

One day your lookin' in car mags at Porsche, the next day the coolest car is , well , yours. I do miss that car,had a lot of fun in it,plus, the back seat would fold down.....ah,single , 16 and a car...those were the days!!!!

I never touched a stick-shift before my truck, I practice using my playstation and a V3 steering wheel. Which worked pretty good to get the foot movement and hand to work together. When I finally got my Dakota, I only stalled acouple of times in reverse never grinded or miss-shift.

After almost 2 years driving stick I can't get enough of it. Normal driving I shift at 2250-3000 rpm and pushing it well you know.

Later,

4.7... Best gas mileage is shift at 2,000RPM and that is where the MPH the owners manual states to shift at, sits on the tach, with 3.55 rear end gears.

well the limiter is 5200, so i normally shift at 5150 rpm, except when i go to the store or post office then i shift at 5000 rpm.

the best way to learn to drive a stick is to floor it untill the tach gets well into the red, then move your foot off of the clutch as fast as you can.
dont worry about taking your foot off of the gas when changing gears, just leave it planted to the floor and shift as fast as you can.

It seems learning to drive a stick is difficult enough. I would say don't worry about looking at your tach now. Just listen to your engine and shift accordingly. Use your tach once you master the foot movements. just my 3 cents.
