Looking at buying a 4x4 4.7 2002 Club Cab. What do I need to look out for? Any mechanical/reliability issues? Will be taking it off road, after modifications. From everything I have seen and read, compared to a Tundra it seems to be a better truck? What do you think?

Terry, I have a 01 quad cab 4x4 4.7 and I love it. So far I have had NO problems with mine. I use it to tow a pop up camper in the summer time and I use the 4x4 quite often. I don't go 4 wheel'n though. Can't afford the repairs if I break something! No complaints here though. I bought my through autobytel.com

Check over the paint good before you buy. If its one of those dealers who lets you test drive it for a day then run it by a paint and body shop and have them look over it. They do have a history of bad paint/missing clearcoat. Mechanically it will be sound.

I do not have a new dak right now but have been surfing this site for a month or two. The problems I've seen repeated here are

Ball joints rattling after quite a few miles (20k+)

Warped rotors (to be expected on most domestics not dak spacific)

Power steering pump problems

Stalling at idle (ROM FLASH TSB fixes problem)

Now I don't know if all newer dakotas are going to hit the ball joint and power steering pump problems. I've been wondering if a PS cooler would eliminated the problem with the pump.

Keep in mind these problems shouldn't keep you from buying but you asked :) Every new car or truck I've owned hasn't been flawless. If you go into this thinking everything should be perfect and no problems whatsoever then your in for a surprise because NOTHING is perfect, not even air planes are perfect.

What you do is take them in stride, problems listed are minor (except ps pump).
