I was looking under my hood because I thought one of my pullies was ticking. It turns out there is this little box behind the battery that kind of ticks. It only when the car is started. Anyone have any ideas??

Same thing happens to me. I read in earlier posts that it might be the PCV valve, but i don't know if that's it or not.

I am also interested in what causes this ticking noise when the truck is just started.

Its not that, I dont think. Its this little black thing with what looks like a screw off top. I can feel what ever is ticking if I put my finger on top of it.

Are you refering to the power distribution box? Open it up and see if there are a bunch of fuses and relays in it.

I have not had a chance to look at what you are talking about yet. I heard someone else on this board mention that there is an additional sensor around the battery tray that records temp. of battery. It alter the charge rate to match pre select algorithms to try to produce and maintain best rate of charge based on temps. It is designed to prevent over chargeing. It must have some way to vary the voltage, current and time of each chargeing cycle. If it does this often enough then it might produce a ticking noise as the relay cycled rapidly. I doubt that this is the case it is just a theory!!!!!

I would be willing to bet it is the purge vac. solenoid. Nice try sandman but all the battery temp sensor is, is a thermister. The computer takes that reading and determins the voltage accordingly. Then it grounds the field wire from the alternator by varing the duty cycle. No relay in the system but a transistor.

Its not the relay box I know that. It is in front of
that and almost behind the battery. It was not
ticking before when I checked it. I have to ask
my freind he has the shop manual.

Hay CW what is your take on the ECM that dodge uses. I am still learning how dodge runs their engine management show! The more I learn about their system the more I think that dodge runs to many funtions through the ECM. It seems like a real shame to have to replace an ecm because it fails to regulate the alternator. Is it common to have to replace an ECM due to non engine management related thing? I didn't think I was right I just felt like talking and thought I would throw one out there :):):) Thanks for explaining it !!!! See Ya CW!

The shame in all that is now SAE is forcing that one modual be used for the transmission and engine in the new trucks 2003 or 04 can't remember which. Its called sbec +3. I have to look at my book to confirm this but as soon as almost anything powertrain fails and it is computer related the whole sbec will have to be replaced. The new ones are more expencive as well. Nice huh. One note though I work at a small dealer and very rarly replace a sbec. 99% of the time it is in the wiring or sensors not the sbec.
