Subject: M1 Intake or 1.7 RR's
IP: Logged

Message:
Folks, I keep hearing about people buying the M1 intake for the OHV V8 enignes. Does this intake manifold help torque or hurt it in favor if HP at the top end? I am looking for my next mod and cannot decide between an M1 or 1.7 rollers rockers. I really want to preserve my bottom end torque.

Right now, I currently have all the minor mods on a 2000 RT (FIPK, MSD 6a and wires, Accel coil, 3923's and Jet stage I). What will work best with what I have currently and is there a PCM upgrade to take full advantage of my mods?

Any help is greatly apprecated. Thanks all!

I don't know which one will affect performance, but I would personally go with the M1 intake first. If you have the 5.2/5.9 engine, the stock intake on those engines have a weak plenum pan gasket, and installing the M1 will fix that weak gasket for good (M1 is a one piece construction).

Hey Josh,
Did the ignition upgrades you made to your truck help? Power (top, bottom, mid), mileage, or both? I currently have performance wires and 3923's, but would consider upgrading the coil, etc. if it helped. I am mostly concerned in what the coil and 6A box did. I have been told that the ignition on the 2000-up trucks has been optomized from the factory, and aftermarket systems would not help anything, as far as power and mileage. They may however help smooth the idle, throttle response, etc. Thanks.

2000 QC Sport Plus 4x4 5.9L 3.92LS, every factory option
equal-length headers and larger y-pipe
Magnaflow single in/ dual out
Autolite 3923's, indexed
Kenne Bell (Taylor) wires
180 stat
Redline Water Wetter
S-bolt
Homemade 4" cold-air induction
Baffled removed from air hat
K&N air filter
Mobil 1 and Purolator
Perma-Cool auxiliary oil cooler
Map sensor mod
TPS is set at .678 (this is where it works best for me)

Troy, the ignition upgrades did in fact do little to affect the performance of the truck. However, idle is smooth and throttle response is instantaneous. I did not notice any increase in mileage. I would at least get the Accel coil; I have it and swear by it. It is a stock replacement - Accel pn# 140021 (get the adapter pn#140021AH).

McClane, did you install an M1? If so, where did you see the gains???

Thanks guys.

On my 1995 Dak, 5.2L, I know that my intake pan gasket is leaking (truck pings like crazy under load or moderate to heavy acceleration).

I've read many posts on how to fix this, either replace the gasket or get a M1.

I honestly don't know how the M1 will affect performance (either positively or negatively), but if the engine is pinging, that can't be good for performance overall either. From reading various posts, I take it that the M1 shouldn't kill your bottom end power too much.

I am still looking for the M1 intake manifold, the wait list at the dealer (when I last checked) was at 95 back orders. Bernd from Speedtweaks said he can get the manifold, install kit, and gaskets for $375 US shipped.

At this point, for myself, fixing the pinging problem has taken precedence. Sorry I couldn't answer your question directly !

Josh, thanks for answering my questions. I have heard mixed reviews about the M1 hurting the low-end, so I really don't know what to tell you. Have you looked at the Hughes' intakes? They make them in different stages, using the stock casting and modifying it. This may be better for your application. I don't know, just trying to help out.

The 1.7 rr's really wakes up these engines. Lots of bottom end and revs a little easier. Definitely gives some power up top too. The M1 might hurt low end TQ a bit but seems to be very beneficial. check out this link for more info on the M1. http://www.krcperformance.com/java/krc_performance_2bbl.htm

Sweet! I am sold. I think I am gonna get both the intake AND roller rockers! Now, I just need to figure out which to get first!

BTW, I saw in the Jegs catalog that they have the M1 2bbl manifold for like $270. I don't know what the stock status is though...

Thanks people!
