Subject: The Belt & The Rubber Gasket

Hello all... I was changing the oil on the SY Dakota today and noticed a couple of things.
UNO - With 42K miles, looks like the serpantine belt could use an exchange. It's getting a little ratty. The dealer changed the one on the Durango at 60K, charged me an arm and a leg. Anyone do one of these themselves? I am assuming there's one bolt to loosen and it comes off/goes on easy. Or, is that an incorrect assumption.
DOS - Directly ABOVE the oil filter - there's a large bolt with a rubber gasket around it. I don't know if this is a ball joint -- or something else. It's directly ABOVE the oil filter (large silver bolt holding down a rubber gasket). Anyhow - this rubber gasket is hanging down, it's frayed/broken, however one would describe it. Any idea what the heck is up with this? Extended warranty item if needed? Thanks all - Jim

Answer for Question UNO:

Changing the serp belt on these trucks has to be one of the easiest things to do. There is an automatic tensioner directly below the alternator. Turn it clockwise with an open-end wrench (16mm i think) clockwise and slip off the old belt.

DOS: could it be the motor mount you're talking about??? Just a guess. Hope this helps and good luck!!!!

Thanks man -- I took a couple of jpegs -- one has the forward view of this "thing" with the cracked rubber -- the other is a shot of the alternator. I looked directly UNDER the alternator - can't find anything that appears to be the auto-tensioner. Can I email these shots to you?? Or anyone else that might be able to help? My email is BarneyBoy35@worldnet.att.net Drop me a note with "DUHHHHHHH" in the subject line, and I'll email you the shots for some advice. Thanks much - Jim

Please click on the SY Dakota near my nameto view my profile. I have a shot of the belt on there. Where exactly is this auto tensioner located?
Only got one email asking for shots of the rubber gasket thingy - thanks for responding, but the member didn't know. We'll get that mystery resolved soon I hope too... Jim

The auto tentioner is the pulley just to the left of the alterntor and just to the right of the coil, at the very bottom of your picture. Under the hood somewhere there should be a sticker that shows you the belt routingtake note of this so that it can be put back on correctly.

The rubber thingys in question are the upper control arm bushings. If the rear one is hanging off then you need new ones. Reccomend that a mechanic does that one.
I copied the pic and will circle the bolt in question. I will shoot it back to you. All you need to do is put a wrench on it and twist away from the belt (clockwise). All it is, is a spring in the housing and it keeps tention on the belt.

Sorry couldn't really tell you just don't forget to factor in a alignment as well. Thing I would do is find polyurathane bushings for replacements. If it is under 30,000 or what ever US warranty is, Chrysler will pay for it.
