Subject: Lost my power steering this morning!
IP: Logged

Message:
So i was on my way into work on a slushy road fishtailing a bit for fun when all of the sudden my steering wheel got real tight....it felt like the tuck had stalled. Unfortunately it hadn't. I guess i lost my power steering. I looked at the belt under the hood and it seems fine.

Anyone know what might have happened?

This sucks because i need my truck this weekend to go snowmobiling. :(

The fluid was full so i just dropped it off at Dodge. The good news is that the truck's a 2000 so it's warrantied. The bad news is that they don't think they'll have it done in time for the weekend.

I asked the guy if it would be alright to drive it with no power steering (it's tough when your going slow but once you get up to speed it drives like a porsche!) anyway he said it could really mess things up driving it the way it is.

Anyone know if thats true?

I'd hate to rent a truck just to drive the 50 highway miles to where i'm snowmobiling if i don't have to.

I would suggest that as you drove through the slush, you got your power steering pulley wet and the belt was slipping instead of spinning the power steering unit. ..Just a guess..

If its the powersteering pump, then you could drive it. But if its not the pump, you could make things worse and cause another steering failure.

If the problem has not been diagnosed, it wouldn't be worth the risk.

I noticed that on cold starts, if I cut the wheel hard whne backing out, it is very stiff. Seems the power steering needs to warm up a bit(?). I'm a New Englander also. After that, it does drive fine though.

Yeah Joel, the guy said if the shaft is broken it could cause havoc.

I wish i knew... anyone know if it's east to diagnose that (broken shaft vs. pump sh*tting the bed)?

I wonder if the pump overheated? Perhaps you could install a power steering cooler so it doesn't happen again. They are inexpensive and easy to install.

My power steering pump went out about 2 weeks ago, Mine is a 2000 CC 4.7. Be glad it was under warranty, mine wasn't. $385 parts and labor.
The front seal around the shaft when out of mine. It didn't leak alot but it was enough that it couldn't pressurize the rack.

These power steering pump incidents on the 4.7L engine are perplexing. I have a 2000 4.7L V8 hemi also. (And I am in Vermont too) I hope these are not signs of future problems with the PS pump on the 4.7L engine.

(Scott) are you saying that your 2000 Dakota was NOT under warantee? I thought it was a 3 year factory warantee!?! How come yours was not covered?

I just had my 2001 QC Sport 4.7 L 4x4 at the dealer yesterday for 15k servicing. I had been hearing a 'whistling' noise from the engine and had them check it out. I thought water pump or alternator, but they found the power steering pump to be making 'excessive noise'. They ordered me a new one, and it will be replaced under warranty. I hope that this is not going to be a problem area for this vehicle, but if it is, then I hope our dealers will keep these parts stocked, so that our down time is minimized.

Man, This afternoon I was slowing down from a high speed and the stering wheel got vibration and kinda hard and i could hear the power sterring pump whining when i would turn, Here is the catcher...Yesterday I went through a flood of water and the truck almost staled but then it was fine after i got out the flood, afterward the rear breaks were squiking bad and still are, then today i get this problem with the powersteering, do you think the water i went in caused this? Im going to check it as soon as i get out of work today. Thanks

Lost my power steering
IP: Logged

Message:
I lost my power steering last night while driving up a good size hill. After I lost traction I decided to reverse down the hill. I cut the wheels hard right for a second and then the steering wheel went an extra two inchs. The hoses do not leak and the Fluid was about half full :-( I added fluid this morning and drove around to try to work in the new fluid. Air bubbles were defiantly not the problem. Does any one know of a sure sign my pump is gone? Thanks Alex

So far my power steering fluiid in my truck ('00 4.7l) has gotten low enough to burn up once (58k mi). I then filled it then flushed it at 62k. At 72k it was low and getting full of bubbles again. I then re-flushed it. After that I notieced that the fluid really flows through the resivoir, is this normal?

I am having the same problem with my power steering. Feels like a stalled engine. My truck is the 93 SLT 4x4 with 94k. It just went out. Makes a lot of noise the more you try to fight the steerig. The belt is not the problem cause I tried a new one. The reservoir does have air in it though. Flushed the system instantly with turn of the key it was good but as I drove it started to make noise again and became hard again........

i drove a f250, with out working power steering for close to a year... if it is just the pump, then no, it wont ruin anything else...

my truck whines at higher speeds now, sounds like it is coming from the PS unit, when you get up there it starts to vibrate. heres the catch, it only does it when the wheels is turned to the left, no matter how much. its fine if i trun to the right... anybody have this prob? mines a 99' r/t...

My 2001 4.7 is having Power steering pump problems and I only have 29,900 miles. It's going to go. Right now it makes a squealing clunk on cold starts and is hard to turn until the pump gets primed then it is ok.. They should issue a TSB if all of us are having these probs on 4.7s.
