Subject: Tranny and Diff. Fluids? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 RC 4X2 3.9L 5-speed without the LSD. I'm looking to replace the tranny and diff fluids with synthetic
1. What weight and type of lube do i need for each?
2. What is the fluid capacity of the tranny and diff.
3. How are these fluids drained and refilled, and is this as easy as changing the oil?
4. Finally recommended synthetics that i can actually find.
Thanks
Geoff

Message: I found an interesting article on www.allpar.com (http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html) that discusses Chrysler transmissions. I don't know if it applies to RWD Chrysler transmissions though, but it is worth a look.

Message: From the research I have done, you need a GL4 rated gear lube in the tranny, and GL5 in the diff. GL5 will erode the syncro's in the tranny.
Mobil has both in synthetic.

Message: Thanks Ron
Why does dodge not list these specs in the manual?
Also are there different weights to worry about or is it just GL4 and 5?
and i still need to know how much to buy and changing difficulty

To answer your questions:
1. 75w-90
2. About two quarts
3. Tranny: plug on side and on bottom. Pull both to drain; reinstall bottom; fill through side until it runs out; reinstall side plug.
Haven't done the diffs yet. Mine has a plastic cover where there is normally a steel plug. I don't know if there is a threaded hole under the plug.
4. I'm sure others will post with brands to choose from.

Message: I am being distracted, so please forgive the fragmented replies.
The tranny capacity is about 2 quarts. Don't know about the diffs.
To drain the diffs, I use an oil pump to draw it out. You can find one at almost any autoparts store.

Message: I am pretty sure that they list this in the capacitys section of the owners manual! They also tell you what type of fluid to use. If you plan on doing alot of work yourself on your Dakota you might want to get a service manual. You might want to check out Redline Raceing Oil. They make a product called MTL(Manual Transmission Lube) wich is excellent for manual transmissions.
