I had mine fall off on the interstate...
'93 Dakota - cable just gave out after 11 years.
'Course when I came back it was gone... somebody must have picked it up.
I was worried it was certain to cause a major pileup on the highway

Thought I was the only one that had their
spare fall off. On our 88 gen 1 dak when we
went to sell it a buyer was looking it over and
asked "Where is the spare?" I was a bit
confused assuming that everyone knows it's
under the bed, and preceded to show him
where the tire should be and found nothing
but a frayed cable dangeling. Go figure!

I just have it tight enough so it doesn't rattle.

i have a 2001 dodge dakota and just had my spare tire stolen. they cut the cable and stole the entire mounting system, new $150 rim and new $156 tire. this happened at the university of minnesota east river road parking garage on halloween night and the university and cops won't do a thing even though all the ramps have security cameras. they won't look at the security tapes to even get a license plate number or to see who did it. so much for my tax dollars going to pay for the police. there has been a HUGE problem in the minneapolis metro area with scum stealing tires and catilitic converters. NOT HAPPY!!! won't be putting another one on. i have AAA, so i can have them tow my truck to the dealership by me and i can get the tire from my garage if needed. can't trust your vehicle anywhere these days.

Nine year old truck-why not get a used rim? Probably find a useable tire on the rim at the same time.

the cables broke on all three of my 89s, lost two tires and on the third one it broke off at a stop so i caught it and got the spare tire back.

It's a good think you didn't cause a major incident. I worked with an old guy who was towing a boat on a trailer behind his Silverado pickup. The spare tire fell out from under the truck, jammed under the tailer, bending and ruining it, cracked the bottom of his boat, whick flew up off the trailer, slid along the road, and hit another car. The tire continued to the other side of the highway, where it smashed the front of some guy's new Jeep. We gave him crap about that for a long time.
