Subject: blower question (feet vs. defroster)
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2001 QC 4X4. When I put the selector switch to the feet for heat, more air seems to come out the defroster vents than the lower vent for the feet. Has anyone else had this problem?

Make sure that you have the selector in between the two dots not on them.

I have the same "problem". I took mine (2001 QC)back to the Dealer thinkning there was something wrong. They said that's normal.

Every vehicle I've ever owned has always produced a lot of air at the floor vents when the "heater" setting was selected. Not the Dakota...

Ditto.

I actually have to put my HAND down there to tell that there's any air moving out of the "foot" vents.

Mind you, there's no shortage of heat, it just doesn't seem to make it to the floor area.

I don't mind. At least the DEF vents keep the windshield clear.

I noticed the same thing with our '02 Ram. I can't recall what my Dak is like though.

Maybe you guys should read my post titled "Poor Workmanship" -- maybe this is where your trucks are going bad too -- it was just a little more evident to me when the gear that switches the heater box to the floor ducts fell out when I went over a bump and it hit my boot.

I must tell you, however, that it's going to take the dealer a while to fix it -- I plan on making an appointment and dropping it off in the morning and then picking it up when it's done -- I absolutely HATE paying for my truck when I can't use it (especially when they won't give me a loaner car). The reason it takes so long is that they have to rip apart the whole dash to get to the box.

(eallen) Why do you see this as a "problem"?
It is completely "normal" operation. ("normal" meaning "that is the way it works")

Think of it this way... as the moisture on the floor is heated and begins to evaporate... the first place it heads is the cold GLASS surfaces to condense again. Without some kind of airflow over the galss, you would quickly become fogged in.

You could ask your the dealer check the vacuum motors under the dash to ensure that the flapper for the "defrost" is closing sufficently.

Bruce,

Although your theroy makes sense, all other vehicles I have owned (not dodge) have not had this problem. The "problem" is that I can't really feel any air coming from the lower vents when the lower vents are selected. I would say that 80-90% of the air is coming out defroster vent.

I would say that the gear that switches the ducts over being broken is of a greater chance. Being that mine worked perfectly fine for the first 3,400 miles then, all of a sudden, at around 3,450 miles, my truck experiencing the same problems as the one mentioned above due to a gear falling out of my dash and hitting me in my boot, is much more of a hypothesis than Dodges just having crappy heating on the floor. I can tell you right now, even if the gear didn't fall out, I would know that something was wrong.

Well, it looks like mine IS working... When I was under the dash I noticed that the air comes out of a duct almost against the firewall. I am not used to the air duct being there so when I was sitting in the seat and put my hand by the floor to feel if any air was coming out I could not feel it because it was so far back. Some air does come out of the defroster vent but more DOES come out of the floor vent. Also, I can see the black gear thing with a lot of white grease that others have spoken about. Mine is working ok and I can see the gear turn.

Thanks for your help everyone!
