hi all

note: repost of sorts to correct typos

i have test driven new 4.7/5spd/4wd/3.92 quad cabs with and without the tire and handling group and would like to pass this along to anyone thinking on ordering a new one.

etown dodge in elizabeth town pa has 20-30 plus daks in stock at all times...

so yes .......i did drive 4.7/5sp/3.92 with and without the tire and handling group intentionally to see the diff since i have had tire diameters on bikes and cars greatly effect acceleration and perfomance in the past

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

spec differences:

the tire and handling group on 4wd bumps up the 235x75x15 tires (28.9 inches in diameter) to 265x70x16 (30.7 inches in diameter)

the width of the rims increases from 7 to 8 inches. a rear stabilizer and fender flairs are
also added

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

findings:

1. the 265x70x16 tires on the 4wd with tire and handling group K I L L S acceleration compared 235x75x15 stock tires.

the tire and handling group equipped dak felt much, much slower on acceleration ...so much so that it did not even feel like the same truck.

i think the reason is the 265x70x16 is 1.8-1.9 inches greater in diameter than the 235x75x15.
this effectively reduces the 3.92 to about 3.66-3.68 if i am doing the math right.

if you leave the stock rear end 3.55 as is when you order then add the tire and handling group.... effective ratio would drop to 3.22 or so... YIKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

if you want to street/drag race, the tire part (265x70x16) of the tire and handling group will not be for you buttttt there are replacements to get you back close to the 29 inch stock tire size and the 3.92
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Pirelli&model=Scorpion+Zero

go here to check out the Pirelli Scorpion Zero 275x60x16 which is 29 inches in diameter. it is also a highly rated tire

also NOTE.... the 255x55x16 which is 27 inches in diameter which yields a 4.19 effective rear end ratio....!!!!!!

>>>>>

2. the tire and handling group equiped 4wd dak rides harsher over normal road bumps/pot holes than vs std equipped dak.

i really dont know why but this might be due to the extra weight of the 16 inch tires/rims vs
std 15 inches. there might be stiffer shocks in the tire and handling group but the brochures do not state this.

you might get complaints from wives, girlfreinds, moms...whoever if the roads where you live are rough and have lots of pot holes

note: i did receive a post that the rough ride part of the tire and handling group went away after a month or so....

>>>>

3. the tire and handling group sway bar does control roll in turns vs stock equipped daks w/o sway bars. this is a very good improvement

>>>>

bout it...thanks for all the info you post...sorry for having to do the repost.....have a good and safe holiday season

I have a 2001 QC It says I have 3.52 gears. But everyone else seems to have 3.92. Is this just a miss print.

you can get either 3.55 gears or 3.92 or even a 3.21 on the V-6 dakota.

The sad part about the 3.55 vs 3.92
gear ratios is that it was only a
$30 option.....DOH!

In my opinion the 3:55 with the 5speed are perfect,I aslo tried a few diff combos and found the 3:92s with the 5speed was making the 1st gear almost not necassary, remember the tire is actually only 30 mm`s bigger with the tire and wheel package as the rim is a inch bigger,I drove a few trucks even with the same combos and they fely a little different, there always will be slight variations from truck to truck, sometimes you get that 1 perfect truck, sometimes you dont,I see alot of people complaining about tilted beds squeeky brakes warped rotors whines and whistles,so far after almost a year I cant complain, best new vehicle I`ve owned, knock on wood
