Subject: Plugged cat.

Hey All,

I started to have a rough idle on my 98 5.2 4x4 and have been checking out all kinds of stuff. I have checked all of the sensors on the TB and am down to the cat or O2 sensors. No codes yet. I did have the intake oil leak so there was a considerable amount of oil consumed. Anyone know the proper way to check if a cat is plugged? I have seen a sequence on measuring the intake vaccum, but the directions are not too clear. TO do this you are supposed to record the vaccum at idle then rev it up to 2000 and record that value, then you are supposed to left off the gas and see how much it drops there. Then if there is more than 1 inchHG drop you have a plugged cat. Not sure where this drop is supposed to be. It is 11 inHG at idle, 6 at 2000, and it drops to 5 when I let off of the throttle. I am recording these directly from the MAP sensor through a scan tool. I have also just cleaned the TB and IAC to try to correct this. I did put in new plugs about 2 days before this started.

It runs fine, but when I push the clutch in to decelerate the tac drops down to 500 goes up to around 800 and jumps around in there. Eventually it levels out a little below 600 which is lower than it was before the prob. Thanks for your help.

tap the cat. If it rattles, you have a problem with it.
