I noticed on the Dodge web site that there is a link to Kelly Blue Book suggesting its use when trying to determin the value of your old trade in. I just placed a factory order for a new Dak and plan on trading in my old car. A few weeks before the truck arrives, I'll take my old car to the dealer for them to value ... and also to CarMax for a second opinion. My question is how accurate is Kelly Blue Book in its valuation when it comes to actually getting that trade in price from the dealer? For example KBB suggests that my old car is currently worth somewhere between $700 and $500. So I am shooting for $600 as a fair trade in price. Any comments would be helpful when it comes time to determine when and where to get rid of the old car. Another option is donating it to a charity and taking the tax write off. Thanks.
Greg

You might be able to sell it yourself for about $1000. The KBB will give you wholesale value, might want to look again at retail value.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that I could probably sell it myself for more than the trade in offer, but dont have the time or interest in having to deal with that aspect. I simply want to either sell it to the dealer, CarMax, or take the charitable deduction.

My trade-in, according to KBB and Edmunds was worth $7400 to $8600 wholesale, between fair and average condition. The dealer offered me $6000, then when I pointed out KBB, immediately came back with $7000 (!!!). They stopped there. Another dealer, faced with winning business away from the first, could only come up with $6000. This is with invoice pricing on the truck itself. Moral--your car is worth only what the dealer will give you, nothing more, except if you can haggle a bit more. Didn't used to be that way, KBB used to be an authoriTYE.

One thing my school did was to have a "Car Bash" Fund raiser. They offered kids a sledge hammer and for a dollar, they could pound 3 times. Someone donated that car, Volkswagen Fox as I remember some 15 years back.
