Im looking to get a tonneau cover for my soon-to-be delivered 2002 Quad Cab. I dont want to spend $700 on a fiberglass, and I am looking at just a cover to keep my stuff dry and protected when I am not hauling stuff around. It needs to be easy to install and remove, and built tough.

I have read MANY posts in the archives about Tonneau Covers, and it seems that everyone has an opinion about their particular brand.

What is the best cover, either snap or non, that will cost less than $300? Also, any recommendations on an online store?

All replies appreciated.

extang is pretty popular i think....and it is what i have. go to extang.com to check them out, and then go to onestoptruckshop.com b/c their prices are by far the best ive seen (after tax and shipping it was still 30 bucks cheaper than the extang site's price)

p.s. after installing the tonneau i now routinely get 18 mpg combined mileage....just an added perk

Any problems with the Sabre (Tuff Tonno II), due to the j hook type? Any advantages to it over the snaps? Any disadvantages?

i dont think there are any real advantages one way or the other.....i got snaps. the only thing i dont like is that now that it's a little chilly you have to tug a bit to get the snaps in place....no big deal as long as youre not in a hurry. personal preference applies here

i bought a saber tonno a few months after i bought my truck - in Feb 97. the j-hooks lasted exactly 2 yrs and 8 months - and that cover took a beating temperaturewise - the hot and cold weather of Chicago, St. Louis, Seattle, and Kansas City (yes, ive lived in all 4 places for a brief time). the j-hooks were made of a white brittle plastic.....

theres a 3 year guarantee on the cover, lifetime on the aluminum frame....i called em up before the guarantee expired, and they sent me a brand new cover - and i mailed them the old cover. the new cover has a black j-hook edge which looks a lot more flexible than the white brittle plastic from the previous cover - it should last longer.

no problems with it ever - although its a little hard to roll up with that fairly hard plastic j-hook - and on occasion, it leaks at the corners...

would definitely buy again...only cost me $165.00

my 0.02 cents....

Zute,

I have a QC with a bed extender cage. I installed a Downey SST Tonneau from www.tpcarguy.com . It has plastic self lubricating inverted snaps and I can remove the rear bar quickly to swing the bed extender cage. I seen on my friend's Chevy a tonneau cover that the rear bar is screwed to the frame. He couldn't get the bed extender. Some food for thought. I have seen some soft covers that tilt up like a fiberglass cover. This gives you another option. Good luck and congrats on the QC.

I would like to opt for the soft cover at this point. The hinged type would not allow me to easily remove it for hauling a load above the bed rail, and in most cases are a bit more than I want to spend at this time. Maybe along the road, I may want a hard top, if I find that I am using it more as a large trunk, but for now, I just want to squeeze a few MPG and still allow ease of removal and covered storage for my stuff.

I got an Extang snapless design. I hate the snaps..only because of the looks...snapless looks cleaner..mine is also a rollup which I thing most of them are these days meaning that the front of the cover is locked in and there are velcro straps giving you the option of rolling it up as opposed to actually removing the whole thing

Very easy. I had mine compled in maybe 30 minutes?

I dont reccomend doing it in the winter though unless u have a heated garage.

But that goes for any vinyl cover...very hard to stretch it when its cold

When it rains steady for days, do you get any leakage THROUGH or around the cover?

I would also give a thumbs-up for the Downey SST. I bought one in the fall of '98, and have had it on 2 trucks ever since. I like not having to align snaps perfectly... It has worn well, even living in the UP of michigan and central Ohio. It's a bit of a pain to put on or off in the winter, but doable, even without a heated garage.

Extang is on top for the soft tonneaus.

As far as the hard covers, have you seen the K-cover or the Aerocover?

I have the Extang J hook soft cover and a tailgate protector. The end rail above the tailgate fits tight because of the plastic at the end of the tailgate. It was recommended to trim the plastic protector off but I didn't and it works fine. Like you have read above, don't plan on removing it when it is cold. I have been happy with the looks and quality of Extang, easy on and off. Also the cross pieces are spring loaded for easy removal for tall loads, just roll up the cover and remove the cross pieces and you have a unrestricted bed. No drill frame installation also a plus.

CoverCraft $219 from J.C.Whitney
Nylon snaps work even when it's freezing.
A little hard to seal if you have a bed liner.

Have Access cover, velcro side closing.
Flat bars are part of cover. They roll up
with cover, very fast both ways. No drill
aluminum frame. Price about $450.

Access Roll-up Cover leaks.

Bought my used '05 with an Access Roll-up Cover, which leaks. No front element seal so I re-installed it with a seal but it still leaks at the corners. Any solutions?
Thanks!
