Subject: FORD-GUY SAYS DODGE TRANNY SUCKS
IP: Logged

Message:
I had a buddy of mine (who swears by Ford), said the Dodges have powerful engines that their trans cant handle. He said MOPAR makes a sucky-a$$ tranny and that everyone he know who had one (close relatives) had multiple tranny work done. He said that they still loved the truck, but were frustrated by the amount of problems and times they had to have the trans worked on.

Can anyone shed any light on this information, other than calling my friend names?

Confirm, deny, argue...just reply!

Your friend is right. Dodge does have a history the last 5-7 years or so of tranny problems. Dodge is not alone though. General Motors has a problem with their light truck trannys as well.

Hmm...that's discouraging. I am just now getting out of a GMC lemon which has had trans probs 3 times in the last 2 months.

I wonder how reliable this new Dakota will be?

A lot of "Dodge's" tranny problems are form owners with auto trannies trying to tow trailers in OD, and burning up the OD. For anyone who might not know, DON'T TOW IN OVERDRIVE unless you want tranny problems.

is this just the auto trannys, or are the 5speeds plagued also?

Most of Dodge Tranny woes are or had been with the minivan trannys. I purposely stayed away from their "Ultradrive: trannys because of this. The problems were mostly in the late 80's and early 90's.

Now I have 60K on my 97 not even a hint of trouble 01 too new to rate.

Dodge had an enormous amount of probs with the early 90's and up Ram trannys. Havent heard of the Dakota having any. The 5spd is rock solid and ultra dependable. I know of Daks with miles in the 100,000,s on original clutch. Mine went 120,000. Not sure, but I think for a while the manuals were made by Mitsubishi. If thats true, then no wonder they go so long!!

The manual trans proves to be very durable. That is one of the reasons that I drive one. As far as durability the minivan trans has been pretty well fixed in the last 3 years the early model 41te had many problems. The 46re is the trans that my shop rebuilds the most in full size 4x4 QC. Also I should add that most of the failures are from heavey footed driving in cold weather as well as other abuse. My 97 had only 35,000 on it when I traded it. I towed 5000 lbs holiday trailer with it and never once burned the fluid but as HKSR said, I never towed in O/D. Not that I could anyways.

You should consider changeing you fluid ahead of schuedule. You never want burned fluid in a tranny. I changed both of my filters and 8 quarts of tranny fluid at 9000 miles. I used Redline synthetic C+ATF. The tranny shifts better then ever. You realy want to stay ahead of oxidation. I think that it is not asking a lot to change your trans fluid every 12 months or 20,000 miles which ever comes first. If you abuse your trans. then it would have to be sooner then that. Once you burn your fluid you have to flush the entire trans and if you have alot of friction meaterial in your pan you probably need a rebuild as well. An ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure!!!!!!

I have a 1998 Dakota SLT 4wd.74000km(approx 45000 miles). It have a very sluggish 1-2 shift.Sometimes a little clunk uppon engagement.I can manipulate the length of time it takes to shift with throttle although at full throttle it doesn't seem to slip as much.More if I apply throttle right at shift point. Is this an early sign.Or is there any preventative maintenance.I bought the truck with about 45000km on it and the fluid always looked fine.

I've driven a manual all of my life. Then, I bought my 01 Dakota with an auto. I have about 3100 miles on it now and the tranny shifts REAL hard sometimes, doesn't want to shift at other times and sometimes makes a clunk. I love my truck to death, but if I had it to do over again, I would have gotten a 5-speed.

I agree that thats manuals are more desireable but the wife realy wanted an automatic. I have to admitt that sometimes I like not haveing to shift gears. I have 82 two Toyota starlet (rear wheel drive small hatch back bigger then GEO smaller then chevete) that most all of my cousins and friend learned to drive stick on, heck my mom even learned how to drive a stick with this car. I had to replace the clutch and pressure plate in 1997. I had to replace the rear tail shaft busching/seal in 2000. The car is now my dads daily beater. He drives it too and from the truck terminal. It will still break 105mph. i used once to tow my 1986 Toyota 4runner. I wish they made automatics that durable!!!!!!!!!!
