Subject: Check Engine Light Question '01
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi,

My check engine light came on this morning. Last night everything was ok but the light came on when I started up this morining. I heard that you could pull the codes in the '01 models by holding the trip odometer button and doing 5 on/off cycles or by doing an on/off/on cycle. My question is... If I am able to pull the codes will the light go off? And will the codes be erased from memory? I made an apointment with the dealer and don't want the codes to disappear before the dealer can look at them.

Thanks for any help!

To obtain the code - Turn your key from "off" to "on" three times. On the third time, leave the key in the "on" position and the engine error code will be displayed in the odometer (mileage) window.

Go to OBDii.com to translate the code.

To clear the code, just unplug the connector on the computer closest to firewall for 30 seconds.

Well, I pulled the codes and this is what I got..
P1698

This is the description from OBDii.com

Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth P1698 No CCD/J1850 messages received from the Transmission Control Module (TCM)

The light did turn off though. Anyone know what this means? Should I bring it to the dealer?

Call your dealer service rep and run it by him/her. They may say its nothing and tell you to reset computer..or you may need some repair.

According to the trouble code lookup app on the DML home page (www.dakota-truck.net) this is what the code translates to:

"Unsuccessful attempt to write to an EEPROM location by the PCM"

That's about as clear as mud, eh?

Thanks for your help everyone!!

The dealer said that they don't use the error code system anymore? They said that the code doesn't really tell them anything and that they would need to hook it up to a computer to find out what's really wrong. Unfortunately when I pulled the code, it erased it from memory and the light went off so now the dealer doesn't know what the problem is. If the light goes back on I'll leave it for the dealer to look at. I just can't believe they don't use the error codes when it is an integrated part of the pcm.

Thanks

Actually they do use the same data. The dealer connects the DRB 3 scan tool to the vehicle. It reads out the same information you did. The DRB 3 just converts the fault code to something more understandable. The tool just saves them time looking up the code in some book.

The code you have is a communications issue with the vehicle data bus. One module was suppose to receive a message from another, but for some reason didn't. After a peroid of time the module started receiving the message again, and turned off the check engine light. I wouldn't be too concerned unless the light comes on again.

Chrysler uses what is called a P code like you listed if you gave him that code he should have been able to look it up, unless he is completely stupid. I would not worry about this just erase the code and try again if it comes back then take it to the dealer. The CCD Bus system can totaly go down and it will never leave you stranded. Best case senario the light doesn't come back on worst case it will need electronic diagnosis.

"No bus" means the TCM is not getting or sending the proper signal; start by checking all connections before replacing parts.

"Does this mean I need a new gas cap!?"

That could be a culprit. You might check to see if the cap is tight. I had this on my '01 and it ended up being a hose with a crack in it. To check for the hose look in the front driver side of the engine compartment. There is a small 'tank' with two hoses coming out. You might trace the hoses. Mine was cracked at the ends.

You can also search for 'p0442' on this website. Lots of info.

Just went through this one. My '02 Dakota had this code.
THe dealer ende up replacing the hoses form the tank to the evap canister (all three wre dry rotten) and replaced the fuel filler tube (it was rusting out pretty good).

$150 later and the problem is gone.

I just purchased an 01 with engine codes 442 & 455 because of a bad gas cap filled with rust. You might want to try tapping it on a hard surface to see if some rust comes out. I disassembled mine by squeezing the cap while pressing sideways on the main body. Inside I found a steel spring retainer that was badly rusted and a lot of loose particles. This was held in place by about ten plastic fingers. I cut every other finger to make it easier to remove. Further down, the bi-directional valve seat plate was also made of steel and pitted with rust. Sanded both sides and coated it with silicone grease. Put it all together and it has been fine for the last month. I am concerned about seeing this problem on such a new vehicle. Is it just bad design or do I have water in my tank? Don't expect many of you would bother taking a gas cap apart. Still, it is possible to rebuild the gas cap in these tough economic times.

Most (not all) of the people who experience the rust in the fuel cap are people who keep their vehicle VERY clean. The water from regular washing seems to get inside the cap too easily. DC does have a revised replacement part available for most vehicles experiencing this condition.
