Hi! I've been pondering switching my rear end over to Mobil 1 gear oil when the time comes. I have a 2002 QC with the automatic and LSD. I've read the back-posts here on the subject of using synthetic lube with the limited slip differentials, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on whether I need to get the special additive from my dealer or not.

Mobil's website would seem to indicate that I don't need it, saying it's meant for LSD's and whatnot... yet some people here say you still do. Others say you don't. I haven't asked my service department yet, but whenever I ask them anything they act a little confused. (As a side note, they want to do all maintainance on the truck, so they won't give me a straight answer on questions like these, or relating to oil changes or anything).

If I got the additive from Dodge, just to be on the safe side, would it somehow reduce the effectiveness of the Mobil lube? I've used their synthetic motor oil in my cars since I've been driving, and have always abided by their suggestion that you don't add anything to the oil, since it's already balanced, etc. Any thoughts? I wouldn't have reposted on this subject if I had found an answer I was comfortable with previously...

Thanks!

Andy

Of course. But given that I'm going to be using Mobil 1, what's the answer?

I was in the same situation about 2 years ago. I called Mobil 1, Chrysler, Mopar, dealer, ALL told me to use the additive. Some on the DML said, "you don't need it" however I used it, with Mobil 1 and have had no problems (38K miles)
Its only about 6 oz., I'd recommend using it.

What weight gear lube do we use for the 3.92 LSD rear ends?

I have a major fluid change coming up and need the full monty (engine, tranny, rear, radiator)

I run Mobil 1 in the engine already. I have read that it is best to use Mopar ATF +3 in the tranny, right?

I am planning on running 75w-90 Royal Purple in the rear on my 4.7L V-8 with the 3.55 posi. Even their Pamphlets say that you don't need extra friction modifiers. As for Mobil-1, I'd look at the bottle. If it says it doesn't need it, then I'd go with that. Pay attention while making turns for a while after you use Mbil-1. If the rear makes any kind of clunk or moan or whatever, just go buy a bottle of the additive from Mopar. I'll see how the Royal Purple does, but it may need the additive too.

I don't know the answers to any of the questions asked above, so I will ask another question. The owners manual refers to the rear axle, I assume that they are talking about the differential, right? Also, I have a 2WD 3.55 LSD, the manual says that it doesn't need regular fluid changes (I may be mis-quoting, since I don't have my manual handy). I plan on changing it at some point, but when is a good mileage to change it. I have an 2001 4.7L with 15,000 miles on it. Thanks.
