I have a question for you guys. I have a rattle under the truck when you rev the engine and let off the throttle. I am not sure what the sound is coming from. It also almost sounds like a gear catching?? and this is on a 2000 4.7l engine 4x4 dak?? with only 27k miles!!! i don't smell any thing from the exhaust so i doubt the cat....but could it be the tranny?? or valvetrain?? i dunno. Any help would be appreciate it!! thanks

A cat doesn't always smell climb underneath and bang the exhaust with your hand see if anything rattles.

Ok i went under the truck a little after i wrote teh original message. NO sounds from teh cats. But i thought maybe like the fords that the transfer case sticks when not used, so i put it into 4wd and went to back up and guess what ?? no go into reverse!!!I put it into neutral and back to R and it finally engaged!! well i ran it aroudn teh house and then up onto the road and took it out of 4wd. I went to back up and there was the same tick/rattle as i backed up!!! so i am thinking something in the tranny??? has there been any real problems with the auto trannys for the 4.7?? i think its the what 46rfe??? i dunno....i am used to fords and this is my first dodge. If all dodges are like this then how do they stay in business??? i have had nothing but troubles with this truck!!!!! uggg...and i can';t trade it in b/c i have 44 payments left!!! anyways thanks for letting me vent....any help would be appreciated as usual!!! thanks john.

Hmmm, doesn't sound good. The trans in the 4.7 (45rfe) from what I have seen has been very good. Some times the transfer case will rattle if the chain is loose but they will sometimes lock up when changing direction but you should still feel the trans engage then it will act like it is loaded up. If it is killing you to know what is wrong you could check the levels in the trans and transfer case. They should be nice and red, without smelling burnt. Have fun and good luck.
