Have a '98 5.2L CC, recently I've been hearing some weird noises... right after a cold start, when ya hit the gas to go I'm hearing a damn loud noise, like a overrevving fan or something..only does it for about 15 seconds of gas then it quiets down again.. I haven't had the truck through the colder weather, just wondering if that's normal .. which brings me on to the heater... every so often I hear like a 5 sec grinding noise, seems to be coming from the right side of the engine compartment, but it only happens when I have the vents set to both dash and floor .. if it blows through either of em by themselves, no noise.

Can anybody shed some light on these problems? These forums rock!

Cheers,

The fan noise as you describe it is normal, especially in cool/cold weather. Don't know exactly why it does it, but it does.

On the grinding noise, I'll take a stab at it. On my truck when switching between the various vent positions, I will hear a brief (3-5 second) creaking noise as the doors in the Air/heat "blend box" open and close. By the way, I'm calling it the blend box, but my service manual calls it the "common blend-air heater-air conditioner system, and it's located under the dash, mostly on the passenger side. I've heard that in other vehicles so I assume it's normal. A grinding noise might indicate that one of the doors in the blend box is rubbing up against the blower or some other part in the "blend box." Judging by the diagram in the service manual, I'd guess the recirculating air door, since it is closest to the blower. The other doors in the blend box don't look to be near anything that moves.

But that's just a guess.

Or it could be the blower hitting its own housing if it's just a little loose in there.

Sometimes foriegn objects fall / get pushed into the vent entrances and can get caught in the blend box. Just a suggestion is to look in these areas with a flashlight and take a looksee. I,ve heard of people keeping pens and pencils in the vent openings (for easy access) and they have slipped into the duct and found the way to the blend box, although not on a Dodge so I'm not sure if this senario would apply.
