I have a 1990 dakota std cab 5-spd 2.5L 4-cyl
My friend wants to race me...i have raced a s-10 before and beat it by about 3 carlengths...He has a 4.7L turbo-charged F-150 4x4 and he cant peel out very well either. My truck has some go, but only if i drive it hard....Do you think i could beat him?

Sorry dude, I doubt it. The F-150 is pretty quick for a truck that size, plus it is turbo, but there is only one way to find out :)

Umm, hate to burst the bubble by being the technical prick, but F150's only came with 4.2L V6, 4.6L V8 or 5.4L V8 in the past few years (since early 98, I think). Even before then, it was only a 4.9, 5.0, 5.8, or 7.5L. Besides that, it would cost big money to turbocharge that truck. He might have a supercharger (trust me, they are different big time), but most likely not a turbo. One last thing, he out weighs your truck by about 1/2 a ton (my guess), so you've got him there, but his horsepower and torque advantage will more than make up for it. But race him anyways, it will be fun to hear of who won. good luck

I dont understand, how can a 2.5 4 banger beat an S-10. Even if the s-10 had a 4 in it, the dak seems like it would be heavier. It must have all come down to driver error. None the less, good job!

i was just wondering...if i put a supercharger on just a plain old 5.4L F-150 regular cab, would it be as fast as a lightning??

If he has a turbo, the truck is fast. I've driven my share of Dakotas at my work (3.9's, 4.7's, and 5.2's alike). Believe me, they all peel out pretty much the same. My 3.9 has a limited slip differential -- I can't peel out for nothing (unless I stand on the brakes). So, the reason his might not peel out too well is that his truck may have the limited slip differential (which would be another benefit if you two were to race) -- you'd be stuck peeling out (if you hit the gas or the clutch wrong) and he'd be pulling away as his truck shifted into second gear.

I had a 1989 2.5 Dak,and I don't think it could out-run my 12 year old kid on his bike...or his skatebord. I don't know what the gear ratio was,but man was that truck a dog!! I drove it with 1 ton of dirt and about 70lbs of rebar in it 12 miles, and it took off about the same loaded as it did empty! The only diff was it felt like I had power steering! I kindda miss it , I didn't give a rats a$$ if it got scratched or not.
