Subject: FOG LIGHTS???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 that came without the fog lights already in it. I am looking into buying some ASAP. I have a couple of questions though. I have a 1 inch black square next to standard light switch that has a plug hooked into the back of it. What do those wires go to? Can i hook up my fogs so i can just turn them on with my regular light switch? And last, does anyone know where i can get a good set of clear lights for under 100 bucks? if you could help me out that would be great.

On the 97, the little square button next to the light switch is the factory fog lamp switch. It may be easilest to just connect to that. Assuming the switch is ready to go, once you hook up the fogs you can turn them on with low beams and/or parking lights.

I know the factory ones are about 2 bills. I would imagine those under 1 bill would be pretty weak. I would look into PIAAs. They have a model that pretty much fits the Dakota. Someone else I'm sure could give you details.

PIAA 510s

These are the PIAA replacements that fit in the factory location. They run about $200+ also.

KP97DAK, On my 97 SLT, the truck was already prewired for fog lights. there were two wires hanging down where the lights should go.Just get the switch and relay(goes in the fuse box under hood) from dodge then go to Ebay Motors under Parts and Accessories and search for "dakota". There is a guy on there that sells lights with a metal housing and glass lens that is a perfect replacement for the dodge plastic units. The factory units are 35 watt :( I think the guy gets like $65 a pair for the replacements.
I put 55 watt bulbs in my factory lights and melted the lenses :(
Dave.

If you go to ebay to buy your fog lights, don't buy them through an ad that says "Dakota". When they add the name of a specific vehicle to a title, it always drives the price up because people think they're getting something factory even though the add will say "Dakota Style". Style means they're not close to the real deal. Search by typing in "fog lights" or "driving lights", then look for 4" lights...they fit perfect. Just as a side note, compare those lights (that you can get for about $20 including shipping) to the ones that guy sells for $65-$120...they're the SAME thing (made by "Blazer"). And they still come with that same metal housing and glass lens (which you can get in blue ion or crystal blue).

Quad2NV is correct. I bought some from the guy(fellow R/T owner) who sells them for $60-$90 for Dakota specific with the correct "kit" to bolt on. All it consists of is a longer mounting bolt double nutted to make them reach the hole in the air damn. One of my lenses cracked from a rock, and I asked him if I coudl buy just one, and he said he can only sell them in sets, and gave me a website that he "buys" from. They were listed at $55+shipping. Then I went and looked at his feedback on Ebay. And looked at some of the items he has won. about five of th emost recent that he was a buyer on were the 4" fog lights QUAD2NV mentioned. I bid on a set, and got them for $14+shipping. A hell of a lot better price than the $80 I piad for the first set, the $62 PepBoys wanted for same lights, and the $55 the website link I got listed them at. If you need help on how to make them work let me know and I will help you with install. You MUST use the supplieed wire harness or they won't work. The factory harness won't work for the aftermarket lights. The factory lights use a different style of ground(negatice ground I believe). 12V is always present at the connector when relay installed, and the light only comes on when ground is closed by the switch in dash. So if you use the factory harness for aftermarket lights, as soo ans you connect wires the lights come on and stay on until battery is dead. I used the supplied harness, and tapped the parking light wire for relay power. So now when my parking lights are on my fog lights come on. Lets me keep fog lights even with high beams.
