Has anyone ever had luck in following the advice on the internet (Edmunds.com for example) when buying a new automobile? Often sites say that when factory ordering a truck you may be able to get the dealership to reduce the total invoice price by the amount of their 'holdback' money due them from the manufacture (in this case Dodge). Dealer holdback often amounts to 3% of MSRP. This in effect would be purchasing below invoice (aside for any rebates advertised on TV). It seems every dealer refuses to 'tap' into that holdback money in order to get the sale. Just looking for any suggestions on how to deal with the dealers. Thanks
Greg

Car dealers are undoubtedly trained to handle internet-shoppers. Edmunds worked great when I bought a car in 95, when I did again in 2000, it was obvious they were prepared.

My understanding of holdback is that it reflects the cost to the dealer of having the car in inventory (financing, space on the lot, etc . . .). If the car's on the lot, they incur the expense and have to charge it. I wouldn't pay it, however, if they were special ordering a car for me.

There are so many other factors at play though. I've known several people who've had success with autobytel. However, I've learned that dealers here in upstate NY won't call you back on Autobytel if you say you have a trade. They can't estimate the value of the trade over the phone.

I did pretty well (I think) with autobytel. I never had much luck haggling with dealerships. At least with autobytel they gave my their price upfront and it sounded good enuff to me! Ended up being almost $5000 off MSRP. No complaints here.

I am one of the sick people who actually likes looking for an buying cars. It basically comes down to this. Do your homework and shop around. Keep a notebook. Anything you find documented on the vehicle that you can use to your advantage, include it in that notebook. For example, blue book values. And it is very important to shop first, then buy. In that notebook write down information about specific vehicles you have looked at. Decide what you think is a fair price for the vehicle you are looking for. Don't buy without having that information, and above all, don't be afraid to walk away. Car dealers prey on underinformed consumers. They are also trained to waste your time (literally). The reason is, they feel that the more time you spend trying to make a deal, the less likely you are to walk away from it. Goodluck and happy hunting.

Do all your research. Look on the net for anything you can find on pricing, problems and anything else that concerns you and print out copies to bring with you. I didn't get the run around when I went to the dealers because they saw I had done my homework. Also if you can find it theres a list that tells you every option and model with the pricing of what the dealer paid. My dad found it for me so I don't know the web site. And the last thing is look around at a few dealers. Get prices from them. I told my dealer I could get almost the same truck at another dealer and they started throwing extras at me to buy it there. So make dealers bid against each other. It takes a little longer to get your truck but it saves you some money and could get you some nice extras. To make it simple go between two dealers, and try to go to the most popular two because they want to out do each other.
