Subject: brush guard and light bar
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm looking for some off-road items (just for looks) for my '01 4x4. I'm trying to find a simple brush guard (without anything covering the headlights...Mopar has one but it's like $400!).

I'm also wondering if anyone has seen a light bar that is easily removable, maybe by pins or something at the bottom of the mounting tubes. I'd like to have the bar, but can also see the need for my bed to be covered with a tonneau for moving stuff. If anyone has seen anything like this, or knows a place in central Ohio that could do it custom, I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks

I was looking for a brush guard too, but they were all sort of "over-powering" to me. I love the looks of the Dakota front end -- I didn't want to cover it up. I bought a Safari light bar (very easy install) by Westin and two KC Daylighters. They are like spotlights and the whole setup is sort of low-profile, but not over-powering -- I'd say it adds a nice accent to my front end to be honest.

The whole install took about a half hour for the bar, and about 1.5 hours for the lights (I'm a bit of a perfectionist with my truck though so I'd say it would take an hour all together if I didn't care).

Both of you, get a westin Bull Bar. I dont know if they have Dakota applications though. But they have a Very nice design, low profile but still adds alot to the truck. It mounts under the front bumper and goes as high as the bottom of the grille. My friend has one on his Excursion. It looks GOOD! Good Luck.

And DeaPee, I have a roll bar from Smittybuilt. But I also wanted to keep my toneau. So I installed the roll bar. Then cut the toneau to fit snuggly around the bars. Looks good, but I love the whole custom thing. Not many people have done this and I cant figure out why.
Good Luck

I already checked the application for the Westin Bull Bar and unfortunately they only make it for Full-Size trucks at this time. I like the look of them too and am trying to find something that does not coverup my Daks good looking frontend with SS Grille Inserts and the Westin Safari Bar is about the only one other than Mopar Push Bar that doesn't. Had it on my 99 RC Dak and like it but it started rusting after only a few months as did my Westin Step Bars, heard it is chronic problem with them.

matt01,

I agree with you, the Dak front end is way too pretty to cover up with a "brush guard". I put a SmittyBuilt bumperguard/light bar on mine and it comes just slightly above the black portion of my bumper and you can mount the lights above or below the top bar. It's way more "beefy" than the Westin light bar... I think it's called the Outlander model, if I remember correctly.

Westin offers a 5-year warranty on their black Safari light bars and I believe a lifetime warranty (correct me if I'm wrong) on their chrome ones.

Joe E. -- I think that might be next on my list. Something about the light I get while driving through back roads from just the two KC Daylighters makes me want 6 real bad (that's a good idea with the tonneau cover -- all my trucks have had tonneaus).

On another note, I saw a 98 or 99 blue Ram Sport today extended cab with a nice roll bar on it with the same custom tonneau cut-outs. He pretty much ruined the looks of it (in my eyes) when I looked REAL close and saw the four lights on it. They were like those 'low-profile' lights that are meant to stick in the 1.5 inch vertical spaces on the front of a mitsubishi eclipse or something.

I just ordered my body lift so I have decided for ease of installation to use a Pro Comp Pre Runner Bar. It does muck up the look of the front end too much and looks cool with a spot for two phat Hellas. I would like to order a roll bar for the back of mine too(more Hellas:) and have the tonneau trimmed to fit, maybe we can do a group buy for and save some $$?

Also Westin does give a 5 year warranty on the finish for black steel and limited lifetime on the chrome(if the rust started from a chip, your outta luck) and with the black steel you have to pay the shipping and insurance($16.97 to be exact) to return it to Westin for replacement and of course wait for it to get back, major pain in the ass. I live in NY so winter is not very good to accessories to begin with, especially ones that rust during the summertime:)

Now about that group buy? and how to do?

I have the Mopar light bar with side tube rail bars on my '98 Dak... love it completely. I understand about the tonneau problem though, I figure I'm just going to go for a flush mounting one once I get the cash.

I know there is a "light bar" available for the Dak. It also doubles as a "Step" for when you need to get into the rear of the engine bay.
It has 2 "lugs" designed to to hold driving lights. (It would be too high off of the ground for foglights.)

I beleive it is made by "weston" (sp?)
