Subject: Gas Mileage With Cat-back Exhaust
IP: Logged

Message:
Just wondering if anybody gets better gas mileage with an aftermarket cat-back exhaust? I would like to get the gibson single pipe exhaust for my 4.7 , but not if my gas mileage is going to get worse than it is. Anybody have an increase in mileage? Oh, another question- how much power does the gibson single make on the 4.7?

I can't speak for the 4.7, but my 3.9 improved with adition of the gibson single exhaust and jba headers. I'm seeing around 3 mpg over what I used to get (mixed driving, stock was around 15.2 mpg). The only problem is that I like the sound of my truck too much now. I've always got my foot in it, so my gas mileage is getting about the same or a little worse uless I'm careful!

I've got a 4.7 with the 3" gibson cat back. Nice sound, but I noticed no change in gas mileage (13-14 city, 17 highway). As far as the power issue, I can't say for sure. I added an open-element air filter at almost the same time, so I can't say for sure what difference the exhaust alone would make. I can tell you that when new, it was all but impossible to break the rear tires loose on dry pavement. Now, between being broken in and the exhaust and filter, that is very easy to do despite the addition of a topper on the bed. I'd encourage you to get an open element filter or some sort of less restrictive intake...with just the exhaust and no change to the filter, mine seemed to bog a bit on the wide-open throttle shifts. The open element filter cleared that right up. It also balanced the sound better, because there was more intake noise coming from under the hood to balance the increased noise coming out the back.
