Dr. D.- Having a company go public lessens the chance of bankruptcy by giving it the greatest access to capital possible. I could go on and on about Mergers & Aquisitions and the synergies they produce but I won't bore you. Rascal, I agree with most everything you said other than your view on "low bid" practices. I don't think Amsoil can compete head on with Big Oil in the marketplace because of their size, and that's why they need to market the way they do. Hell I wish they would sell Amsoil at my local Wal-mart and I would give it a try. I can get fully synthetic Mobil 1 and filter change from them for about 30 dollars. I would pay a few extra dollars to try amsoil but I don't want to change it myself. By the way I used to live across the bridge from Superior Wi. where the Amsoil headquarters are located, and Amsoil had a company van that drove around that had a tally of the number of miles driven on an oil change. I think it was 300K+. Pretty impressive but this was 10 years ago or so and I can't remember for sure, but I wonder how many miles they eventually got out of that van?

What I like about Amsoil is that they will deliver right to my door via UPS.

And, since Amsoil is so far superior to Mobil1 why would I want to use it?

Dr. D

P.S.

FYI - "Wal-Fart" will install Amsoil if you take it to them.

BoatAnchor, Did you learn by reading INVESTING for DUMMIES? Your comment "Having a company go public lessens the chance of bankruptcy by giving it the greatest access to capital possible." is pure BONKERS !!!!

Companies go the route of IPO (Initial Public Offering) so as to "cash out" the original pRINCIPALS, aNGELS, and VC (Venture Capital) investors. VC's only invest in companies with a pre-determined exit strategy. One of which can be an IPO.

Care for lesson # 2 ?

Dr.D., Amsoil ain't "SO FAR SUPERIOR". Please tone down your OVER-enthusiasm. It is beginning to grate on all of us here. Every company competes on one of three levels.... "Quality", "Price" or "Somewhere In Between. There is a market for all.

Smart Ass Donnie.

You are absolutely correct THAT is the reason companies issue their IPO, BUT I was mearly replying to a statement by Dr. D that companies that go public either go bankrupt or merger/aquisitions happen. Public companies can dilute existing shareholders to the fairthywell with secondary offerings, convertible bonds. etc. when cash/capital is needed. You must be a geeky investment banker wannabee, so stick YOUR copy of investing for dummies UP YOUR ASS.

My dad was a test pilot and A&P mechanic in the Air Force during WWII. I learned most of the mechanical skills I have from him. I also learned about MMM from him.

He was involved in the transport of aircraft across the atlantic, and when I asked him about MMM he told me that he didn't really know what it was or how it worked, but that during that time (WWII), the only way to get engines to survive the flight across the atlantic was to use MMM in both the fuel and oil at the prescribed rates. Getting aircraft across without it was nearly impossible due to engine failures. That's what sold him on the product.

I think it's likely that the motor oil in use then was a much simpler and inferior product compared to what was available in 60's, which was still a simple product compared to what we have today. The motor oil used in WWII was probably just oil, and from I understand, refineries did not have much control over viscosity until the 70's when multi-viscosity oil first became possible.

I have little doubt that MMM was a superior product for it's time, and even now may still be usefull for certain applications. I wouldn't use it in anything with an O2 sensor or catalytic converter.
