Subject: 180 T-Stat and Winter Driving

I have the JET Stage II chip with RS 180 T-Stat on
my 2001 4.7.

Driving in this morning in 47 degree weather, I get plenty of heat with the foot/face blend and 1st position fan settings, with temp dial all the way to hot, yet I noticed the engine temp dropped from just above the first line to just below the first line, when the heater was on.

It returned to normal after the heater was turned off....is this normal?

Those with the 180 T-Stat, on the colder winter days, did you have plenty of heat? Are there problems like I've seen reported with spotty A/C performance during the summer?

BTW, with that 180 T-Stat, I still get the 1281 code for coolant to cold...will this cause engine problems down the road, does it make the engine run richer, and could it be the reason why the engine temp drops with the heater on?

Should I swap my stock 195 T-Stat back in for winter driving (which promotes not getting the full performance benefits from the chip?)

Thanks in advance.

When the "coolant too cold" light tripped, your computer went into "limp home mode" and you totally lost anything the JET gave you.
Go thru the PCM reset process (if you don't know, go to speedtweaks.com for the tips & tricks section).
After you reset the PCM, cut out a chunk of cardboard and slip it between the radiator and the grill to cover up a part of the radiator. Don't cover the whole opening, but covering up a section of it will keep so much cold air from hitting the radiator. The engine will run a bit warmer and the PCM will not trip a code. Hey-if you use duct tape on the outside of the grill, it'll look like a NASCAR racer. You can pull off to the side of the highway and rip off two pieces and then speed away like a pit-stop!! Just kidding.

I swapped out my stock 195 t-stat over the summer with a 180. Where I live, the temperature has begun to dip to -10 at nites and early mornings, so it is somewhat cool.

The defroster is somewhat warm, so I do have some concern as to whether or not the defroster will still be ok when the temperature starts dropping to -20 and beyond. So far, with the 180 t-stat, the windows have not fogged up at all. With -10, it is hard to tell tho'. But if you just turn to face blend, I find I am getting alot of heat, enough to classify it as a dry heat sauna.

I have not experienced any error codes after putting in the 180 t-stat.

I also did not notice any a/c performance issues during the summer. In fact, it is reassuring to see the temp guage more on the "C" side than the "H" side.

I have noticed that with the 180 t-stat, my oil (I still use good ol' dino oil !) does not darken as quickly, which I take as a good sign. With the 195 t-stat, my oil would darken up after the first 500 kms.

I look at it this way, there is only a 15 degree difference (7 C ??), so that should not make too much of a difference in heat output during the colder winter months.

Also, been hitting 26 degrees here and even then I had more heat then I knew what to do with. No spotty A/C performance during the summer as you say some had. IF I run into problems in say -20 or so I will place small piece of black painted cardboard to cover part of the radiator.

Guys, thanks for the info.

Living in the lower Hudson Valley of NY can promote some cold winter days and I wanted to ensure my first winter with my 2001 DAK will be a warm and enjoyable winter. (just bought a new snow-blower to keep the driveway clear)

Re: the 180 t-stat and error code, I'm thinking 'limp home mode' must be just a term, as even with that constant error code, the truck is running the strongest it ever has while also getting the best gas milage I've ever seen....no noticable loss of performance...seems the JET Chip II isn't being hampered by the error code.

Thanks again, will keep in mind about the cardboard...BTW, instead of tape for the front grille, I'd rather throw some stickers up there saying: 'I'm not tailgating, I'm drafting'....go #24!

You know Mace that jet chip does nothing really your truck is running stronger now because all vehicles run better with cold dense air charge coming in

I've had the 1281 code during 80 degree days (yah, I've had it for sometime now) and if in 'limp home mode' due to the code, the chip still seems to work fine, no loss in performance.

Re: colder dense air, I do know the IAT adjustor doesn't offer performance gains below 65 or so degrees, and I've read some posts saying folks keep the IAT off in the winter, but use the chip.

Question to all, physically looking at a 180 t-stat, how do you tell if it is stuck open?

What is the warranty on these RS755 180 t-stats?

Thanks.
