Subject: 6 speed trans issue

My 06 QC 4x4 Dakota, 105k, with a 6 speed manual
transmission won't shift into first or reverse.

When starting it cold, or with the engine off it goes into gear
just fine. After warming up, highway for ~15min, it won't shift
into first or reverse after stopping. It acts the same way as it
does if you try to downshift into too low of a gear. The three
ways to work around the issue is to make sure to put it in gear
before coming to a complete stop, shut the engine off put in
gear and restart, or go through all the gears starting with 6
down to 1. Then it will shift just fine. Once it goes more than a
few (2-3) mph the issue is back.

I have had the clutch recently replaced, about 4 months ago.
The bearings went out. I have taken it back to the shop twice.
The first time they said it could be the slave cylinder, so they
checked it and said it was fine. Then they tried to replicate the
issue the next day when their lead tech was there and could
not replicate it. Likely didn't have it warmed up. The second
time I took it back I made sure it was doing the same thing and
took the tech on a drive. He did not know what it could be.
They kept it and said they looked through all the work they did
and didn't find any issues. Said they changed the trans fluid to
see if it was dirty, but it was fine. The only explanation they
could come up with is the synchros are going.

Has anyone had or heard of a similar issue? Worried it will be
expensive!

I have had it for less than a year. I knew I would be towing
(3500lb max) so I did get an extended warranty (no
judgement, I know they are not usually worth it). It didn't cover
the clutch since it is a 'wear' part, but I figure if it doesn't cover
the trans repair I can cancel it (refund if no paid claim in the
first yr, prorated after) and offset the repair cost a little.
