Howdy. So, I just bought a 2003 quad cab 4x4 due to our family expanding another digit. :)

This leaves me with my 2001 extended cab 4x4 and the 2003 side by side until i get all my cool stuff swapped over (original Beer Budget Brake truck). Now I thought I knew everything there was to know about these trucks - until today. I would have bet a paycheck that all the 16" aluminum wheels were identical from 2000-2004. Apparently they're not. The spoke depth on my 2001 is significantly larger! Offset may also be different, but I haven't pulled both to compare yet. This all makes me think the 2001 has a heavier stronger wheel. One thing to note though, I ordered my 2001 with the larger 265 wheel package. According to the build sheet on the 2003, it was ordered with the smaller 245/70 wheel option. Is this the difference? I tried digging a bit for wheel part number differences, but there doesn't seem to be a clear separation, or variations between years (or wheel option for that matter).

I was planning on installing the same bfg t/a ko's in a 265/70 on my 2003. Wondering if I should just carry over my 2001 wheels and have those replaced instead.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Dan

Did a little more digging... and this pic illustrates exactly what I'm talking about. Upper left wheel is what I have on my old 2001 Dakota, the rest of them are like the other 3.

They all look the same to me. The upper left wheel has a weight on it, but otherwise they look identical.

Go deeper. :)

On the upper left wheel, the spokes are much deeper inside the hoop. There's a very distinct edge higher up on the other 3. My cousin (a car guy as well) didn't see it at first either. Once you do see the difference in person, it'll kick you right in the head - you'll note the wheels are VERY different indeed. The differences suggest that the 5GR83TRMAA is the stronger of the two, more due to the amount of material supporting the spokes. Finish is also a little different, the newer wheel has more of a sparkle in the paint, whereas the older one is more a typical plain 'wheel silver'.

If anything, people should heed caution when replacing one of their wheels. Make sure the part numbers are the same!

Yes! I see it now. Are the thicker ones the newer ones or the old ones. I'm guessing that the newer ones are thinner with less aluminium.... just like everything else made these days.
