I ahve a 1997 Dodge Dakota with a stock AM/FM Cassette radio. I want to put a Chyrsler CD player in its place. Does anyone know how the dash comes off? It appears the plastic housing around the radio and climate controls pops off. There are no visible screws??? Any help/installation tips is appreciated - thanks.

Grab the top section with both hands and give it a gentle jerk it should start to pop off then just follow it around and keep popping it is all held in with clips. Hope this helps it's alittle hard to explain but extremely easy to do.

Craig:

DAK2 is absolutely correct. The black trim that is around your dashboard is only held on by plastic clips. Just gently pull on the trim from the top. Eventually, you'll pop it off.

You'll need to adjust your steering column as well to manipulate the entire trim off of the dashboard.

Once you pull that off, you'll notice that two 13mm (can't remember maybe 10mm) bolts that hold your factory stereo on. Loosen these and out she comes.

You'll be surprised how easy it is to get into your radio. Scary easy. Makes life even easier for would be thieves. :(

Yes very very easy for any one to get the stereo... But figure no mater what they will get the stereo if they want it and the harder it is for them to get it out the more damage they will do to the surrounding items. So figure easyto fix things if some one pulles it out forcfully...

My 91 has Phillips screws around the edge of the dash plastic. Do I just remove them and follow the same principles as above to remove the radio?

I had a '94 and now have a 2000 Dakota. The stereos looked interchangable between the two, so I think your '91 would also have the two screws once you get the plastic off. My old '94 had a star pattern in the screws.

Hey 2wd, just find a star screw driver and remove the screws. The plastic should come off easily. I did it in my 1990 a while back I am trying to remember exactly hoe it goes. If you are putting in a after market stereo, you will need to buy a radio installiation kit from like Walmart of something. Most indash units are not as tall as the stock dak units. Good luck.

Hey 2WD. The screws on your dash board use a Torx #15 driver. Should be able to find this at any hardware or auto parts store. I found mine at Schucks (aka Checkers, Kragen). There are also two philips screws behind the panel below the steering column. DON'T forget to remove the panel below the steering column first! It has a phillips screw on either side of the portion that is bent underneath toward the pedals, and should just fall off once the screws are removed with little difficulty. On my '89, the stock foglight switches are mounted to this panel, so to remove it, I have to pull it down, and disconnect each switch.

If you don't pull that off first, you will most likely break off the tabs that hold it to dash just below the guages. Also, there are two philips screws behind this panel that hold on the dash board as well. You will definitely do some damage if you don't remove the lower panel.

Once you get the screws out of the dash, it is also clipped, so you have to give a gentle tug, but it should come out with little difficulty.

Thanks for the help, guys! Think I already have a torx driver bit set, so that should be no sweat. Hope to just find out why the existing radio is not playing and maybe not have to replace it.

Very helpful webpage Pistolero. I've been wanted to upgrade the stereo, but dreaded figuring out taking apart the dash. Doesn't look so hard from the pics. Thanks.

I followed the directins on that website and no problems!!!! I had a stock cassette player in the truck, got a 2001 Dakota CD player on Ebay and swapped it out. I like the original equipment look and I'm not gonna be bass thumping so it works for me.
Thanks

Glad it helped you out...I was also thinking of replacing my stock head unit with an Alpine CDM-7874, but decided to try replacing the speakers first. I put in 6 1/2" Boston FX6's in the front, and FX5's in the back of my RC, and the improvement in sound, even with the stock CD/radio is like night/day. I also put Dynamat behind the front speakers. Highs are great, and even the bass is vastly improved. I don't want to vibrate little old ladies' glasses in their kitchen cupboards, so I'm happy, and I can keep the look of the stock unit, too...not as many thief problems.
