Message:
I recently replaced the rear-diff. fluid with Redline 75W-90 gear-oil with the Redline friction modifier already in it.

I previously had a howl starting almost right at 40 MPH and up to 50 MPH, then the howl would stop past 50 MPH. The howl occurs while coasting in that speed range mostly. This howl remained after replacing the with the Redline fluid.

Can add a bottle of Mopar Friction modifier to the Redline oil all ready in my diff. or is it compatible? Redline's website doesn't say from what I read.

Has anybody experienced after adding some friction modifier the howling going away?

Thanks,
QuadCab - 2001 Dak QC 4.7L w/ 2WD 3.55 LSD

is it under warranty? I know it's a hassle, but the backlash may not be set right in the diff.

I had some problems with mine. took it to the dealer and changed out the fluid. Sound went away. I agree with Clevite 77. Take it back to the dealer.

Okay, I'll make an appointment some time with the dealership, but knowing them they'll probably say they can't hear/reproduce the noise, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks.

I have pretty much the same problem....

a "whine" from the dif which is more pronounced as the speed increases. Does anyone have an idea as to why simply changing the fluid would solve this?

Besides the horrible alignment - which has already more or less destroyed my tires (truck is only 6 mos. old), this "howl" is the only real issue that I can complain about.

I had the same problem. I took mine back to the dealer. They replaced the ring and pinion gear.

Hey autocrosser did they give you the run-around before replacing it or were they pretty cool about it? Just wondering.

If they can hear it they shouldn't give you a hassle. If you have to, take the Tech for a drive and show him what it is doing. I would deffinataly go back.

Agree with posts above that recommend taking to dealer. I experienced same/similar problem w/ my 98 C/C 4X4 while under warrenty. Rear gears were replaced without hassel.

Had same problem w/ the front differential on an 01 Durango R/T. Dealer replaced under warrenty without hassel.

Hope it works for you.

I have a 92 Dakota with 200,000 miles on it and my rear end diff. growls under load when on the gas or brakes. When I coast without applying any power it is totaly quiet.

When I bought my truck 25,000 miles ago it had been retired as a Terminex fleet truck that had a very poor service history. I had all the fluids and filters changed on the truck and the problem still exists.

I hope there is a cheaper fix to this than replacing the rear end diff.

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
