Subject: Electrical problem Instrument Cluster
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '97 Dak, 5.2 V-8, ext. cab. None of the gauges on the instrument cluster work. When I crank the trk the check eng. and ABS lights come on for a brief moment as normal. Other than this nothing else works on the cluster, no guages or digital odometer. I know how the problem was created but I am at a loss as to how to fix it. I was trying to operate a utility winch with inadequate thin gauge wire directly clipped to the battery. The wire had an in-line fuse. I had the truck running so the battery would not drain while using the winch. When I tried to start the winch the in-line fuse blew and then I noticed the instrument cluster problem. Everything else works, truck runs fine, radio and headlights work. I checked all fuses they were ok, and used a test light to probe the cluster terminal in the fuse panel and have power to the panel box. I got a certified used instument cluster and it was not the problem. I have been told that it may be a fusible link, however, I don't have any idea about how many or where they are located. Would there be one between the fuse panel and the cluster. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
