for highway driving which one gets better

i know the 4.7 has a 5 speed auto

and the 3.9 has a 4 speed auto

is the v6 and v8 close enough in comparison to not
worry about mpg between the two

oh both 2wd trucks

I have owned two different Dakotas with each engine and there was no difference whatsoever in gas mileage. Reason being, the 3.9 has to work a lot harder and rev higher to get that truck moving.

If you have a choice, go with the 4.7. It's a great engine that Chrysler designed with longevity in mind, and it has a LOT more bottom end. Not to mention you'll be getting away from the 1960's pushrod technology.

I have a 92 3.9L V-6 club cab. I had a loaner 2004 4.7L V-8 quad cab for a week. Drove them the same commute, 400 miles a week, highway. My 92 gave me 20 mpg, the 4.7L V-8 gave me 17 mpg under the same conditions.

Not that there is anything wrong with OHV motors, but If Chrysler would have offered the 5.7L Hemi as an option in the Gen4 Dakota. One has to wonder why fuel economy you might see since it has fuel management technology

I have a '97 slt club cab that has a 3.9 and 5 speed I am not sure of the rear gear but I'm running 30x9.50 tires that are just a tick taller than the 235s it came with and the best fuel mileage I have been able to get is 16.5 mpg and it doesn't seem to matter how I drive it. I don't take off hard and usually cruise at 70-75 about 1900-2000 rpm. I am really getting serious about doing a 5.2 or 5.9 swap because it is gutless on hills when pulling my car trailer loaded 4000lbs. or less. I'm thinking the 5.2 or 5.9 won't be any worse on fuel milage

My 4.7 has a 5 speed allright.
But it ain't no AUTO!
I think overall it adds about 1-2 mpg, and saves the brake pads from early wear.
