I have a 1997 V-8 Dakota with a manual 5 speed tranny. The truck (and clutch) have 114,000 miles on it. It is still in great condition, by the way.
Anyway, it seems that the transmission "rattles" when it is idling. It almost sounds like a diesel motor. If I bring the rpms up a little it goes away, but starts again when I idle. Has anyone experienced this? The clutch still grabs really well, and everything seems connected like it should be.

That sounds like a typical NV-3500 trans. The rattle probably goes away if you push the clutch pedal in. (that makes everything quit spinning on the inside) I think that they all pretty much do that.

Duner,
It keeps making the noise when I push the clutch in. However, I'm new to this website, so I started looking through the old posts, and I found one about a bad catalytic converter, and I think that might be my problem. I think it's what is rattling. I hit it a couple of times and I can hear something in it moving around. Thanks!

Can you give me an idea of what it cost you? I also heard there are regular and high performance cats. Ever heard of that?

i got it replaced for free at the dealer. the cat has a 80,000 mile 8 year warenty. that was about a month agao, and about a week agao i put a carsound cat on (high flow). i didnt notice that much of a differance, and it cost $120 including install.
if you can get it for free go stock. if you have to pay for it go high flow.

My truck has 114,000 miles on it, so I think I'm out of the window.
