I backed the 99 SY Sport DAKOTA out of the driveway this morning and I hear this slight "popping" sound, sounds as if it's coming from the bed of my truck. To make a long story short, when I got to the office I stood on the rear bumper and rocked it up and down. Seems as if it's a pop in the left rear - above the left rear tire. Now, it's cold this morning here in Va., maybe that has something to do with it -- but I have never heard this sound before. The truck has 38K on it -- too early for new shocks I am sure. All 38K have been on smooth roadways. Maybe it's nothing, but thought I'd ask in here to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Hopefully, it'll go away when it warms up a bit. Thanks in advance - Jim

It may be the shock mount, either upper or lower. Check those areas for cracks or something that 'doesn't look right'. Another area to check would be the sway bar bushings or possible, but doubtful the leaf spring shackles. Just an idea. Best thing to do is crawl under there and just look around at moving componets. Have someone stand in the bed and jump up and down a little while you look at different things from underneath. Just don't get crushed.

I have heard of several trucks with the same problem. I beleive there is a TSB from dodge on a popping sound from the bed. If my memory serves me, it was the mounting bolts for the bed. Certain trucks had incorrect bolts that caused the bed to shift. Do a search on this site under the dealer recalls for popping. Hope this helps!
