Subject: 93 dakota won't start ran out of gas
IP: Logged

Message:
My daughter borrowed my truck on friday and ran it out of gas. I put a gallon in it and she was able to drive it home. I put 2 more gallons in with my gas can at home. I tried to start it today and it won't start. If I pour some gas down the t/b it will run for a few seconds. I pulled the supply line from the injector rails and there is no fuel coming out when turning the key or turning it over. I'm thinking either fried pump or clogged filter. I checked auto shut down fuse and swapped auto shutdown relay with the ac relay and still nothing. any help would be appreciated before I drop the tank.

When you turn the ignition to on, can you hear the fuel pump cycle? I'm thinkin' your daughter owes you a new fuel pump for running the truck dry. Best way to teach them driver responsibility.

Good luck.

Much easier to remove the bed and slide it back.

The thing that sucks is the bed is half full of debris that I was loading to take to the dump. also my driveway is at a steep incline making pulling the tank and or bed difficult unless I roll it down into the street and push it perpandicular to the driveway.

8 bolts hold the bed on, tail gate removes easily
and all tail light wires unplug from harness

with an empty bed only took 2 of us

I've done numerous fuel pumps before
this was way easier then dropping a tank

either way you choose be sure new pump is aligned
properly when installed or gas gauge will not work
right

be sure to give us an update
that's all we look forward to for the time and
help

Try installing a new fuel pump. Remember, it's the actual gasoline that keeps it from overheating, so the more you run it your truck with a low fuel tank the more it will overheat.

Well I finally got around to changing the fuel pump and the truck is up and running. I pulled the 8 bolts that hold the bed and slide it back so the bed was resting on the rear bumper and the tires. The electrical connector looks like it had gotten hot because one corner was melted slightly and I couldn't get the harness connector out of the pump without destroying the connector on the old pump. The harness side connector looked ok except for the little melt spot on the 1 corner and a repair connector was $40 and 5-7 days away so I cleaned the terminals really good and will hope for the best. The old pump motor ohmed out as open so I'm pretty sure it was toast.

The Gasoline in your tank keeps your fuel pump from overheating. It's to bad that g@y morons like Ow dosn't understand that. I guess no one else could either if you were stuck in your trailor house looking at old porn magazines all day while banging your bed.
