Eddie, you may want to rethink that. Pull a valve cover off and see what's going on in there. If it's a lifter that's sticking, or a bad pushrod or low oil pressure, the best roller rockers in the world won't stop the ticking.

A paper towel or gift wrap roll...use it as a noise isolator or, stethascope (sp?). This is a cheap, 'old guy' method of isolating a noise...very effective I might add. Worked great 20 years ago on my `70 340 Duster.

My latest use was on my `95 Dakota.

I just 'knew' I had collapsed lifter. With the motor running I put the tube over the valve covers at each rocker. When doing that I couldn't hear it as obviously. Turns out my harmonic balancer was loose(!) and was wabbling. Seems the bolt was not properly torqued during assembly allowing it to back out slightly. At some point in its life, the bolt threads folded over locking the bolt, but provided a bit of play in the balancer. It ended up opening the keyway up (sideways) allowing the balancer to rotate slightly on the crankshaft end. Luckily the crankshaft was not damaged. Had to buy a new balancer and bolt.

Try the tube. It works!

Pushrods typically don't go bad (bend) unless you held the motor at some really high revs for a while. I personally don't know a way to tell without opening something up. You can remove the valve cover, rocker arms, and then each pushrod to see if ones bent. Beyond that you will need to remove the intake to get to the lifters. You may be able to see one visually collapsed, but likely won't know until you attempt to compress each one. The bad one will easily compress...the others won't (compress easily).

Yes, you would. The valvetrain consists (for the most part) of the valves held closed by springs, which contact rockers, that contact pushrods, that contact lifters. Since these are all metal and in direct contact they will transmit (transfer) sound. You should be able to tell by listening with the tube whether the sound is coming from the front, rear, or middle of the valve cover.

go to the junk yard and buy an extra valve cover(s). Cut the top of the cover off legth wise, just 1/2 inch or so. Install the cover on the side you think the noise is. Start the truck but dont rev it high or oil will blow every where. As the engin is running u can visily check each rocker and really determine which one it is. Then its just a matter of determineing what is the final cause, valve, lifter (look for slop in the rod), lose rocker, etc....

If it's coming from the middle, it's one of two. You won't know which until you open it up. Most guys will change lifters as a set, since that's how they are sold. You can check for a bent push rod 1st if you like, but the lifter is more probable...and once you remove the intake to get to it, you are able to get to them all.

Good luck.
