Check if alternator is charging 13.9 - 14.2 volts
With engine off, check the voltage at the battery (voltage drops)
Get a big DIE HARD!

How often do you run it? This vintage of Dakota uses a tachometer drive board that draws 100mA with engine off. It can kill your battery in two weeks or less. I rewired mine to prevent this.

As said, check battery voltage at idle, and again the next morning before starting. Avoid Die Hard, they have a high, early failure rate. Interstate appears to be good these days, and I've had good luck with Everstart from WalMart.

You should verify first whether the battery is drawing 100mA or more with engine off. The tachometer drive board is a daughter card off the main instrument board behind the dash. I found that it is wired to both the ignition and the battery, and that the design of it allows a transistor to be turned on and draw the battery to ground through a zener diode. I cut the circuit trace on the board to the battery and jumpered it to the ignition, since a tach doesn't require power when off. It works fine and there is no draw on the battery from it now. I'll have to scan and post a diagram of where to rewire it.
