My throw-out bearing is screaming to be replaced. I haven't replaced a clutch in over 12 years and it was a toyota. I barely remember what all is involved, but I;ve got a break right now and I have the time to do it myself.

Any tips/tricks are welcome, as well as a parts list.

I know I'm going to be replacing the throw-out bearing, clutch and rear seal. Anything else I should replace while I have it cracked open?

I'd like to replace all parts with parts that are better than the manufacturer; if that's possible. So if any one knows of some good replacement parts, please chime in.

I also, have to take off my custom steel skid plate, which has some pretty gnarled bolt heads. Is it quicker to drill them out and grind them off?

Well I got under my truck yesterday, grinded the bolt head off and couldn't believe what I found.

They actually left a small gap where the bell housing mounts up to the engine. The gap is fairly small and there were 4 BB size ball-bearings I could see through the gap. The gap isn't large enough to let them fall out.

I have a friend who is a mechanic and said he could get a kit with the alignment tool to do the job for around $150 his cost. Usually the shop charges around $300 for the parts and then of course for the labor. Sound about right?

Well, at least it looks like you've got good weather to do the job outdoors. You might want to leave a little time alotted in the job for re-surfacing the flywheel. Just in case. Check a few local shops or check with your friend that's a mechanic. If the clutch was abused any you may see some discoloration on the flywheel. Maybe check for any leaks at the rear main eninge seal and tranny front seal they'll be a lot easier to take care of while the tranny is out. Good Luck with the job.

Calikota, good luck with your project. Your throwout bearing is only working when you push on the clutch pedal. When you're sitting at a red light or in stalled traffic, put the trans in neutral and let the clutch out. Doing this will greatly extend the life of your throwout bearing.

Thanks for the tip. That's what I typically do, but not for that reason, we have a few really long lights and its more out of laziness than anything else.

I think on of the reason it went out is that there is a small gap where the bell-housing and engine meet up. I'm figuring this gap has allowed debris to get where its not supposed to. I can tell that this gap allows debris to get up there because through this gap I see 4 BB size ball-bearings.

When I replace anybody think there would be a negative effect if I were to put some silicon to seal this gap? The gap is pretty small as it doesn't allow the bearings to escape.

The gap is for clutch dust and (people take trucks into deeper water than they should)water to excape from the bellhousing. If you seal it, you will have problems sometime in the future. I,ve always had three pedals and believe me, its there for a reason.

That makes sense, didn't think about clutch dust. I did think it might be there to let water drain out if it got in there.

Sometimes water is difficult to avoid if your out on the trail.
