hey- are there k&n air filters made to replace the existing filter in the stock filter box, without putting a whole system in? if there are ones avilable, how good are they compared to the more expensive systems?

Yes, there sure are ones that can replace the stock filter alone. The performance gain is little if any (maybe 2-3 Hp at most). They do help out you gas milage a little, and they are reusable. The reason why the FIPK's and the Generation II's cost so much is they replace the whole system. I put an FIPK on my truck and was very happy and highly suggest it. The biggest reason why the kits make more power is because it allows the engine to breath better. Check out Truckperformance.com and Knfilters.com
