They may replace it with a midsize unibody.

This is the Ram Truck product plan

What do you guys think about a unibody. I guess if it was a diesel unibody I might get excited.

Yeah, the constant model changing seems crazy. So the '09 HD's will be the only year for it's sheetmetal; and then another short lived design starting in '10 as well. I don't like the hard line on the side of the bed like the the Dakota change - not nearly as nice as the older flowing design. Maybe some numb skull will blame that on Obama as well. Looks like they didn't learn from Dakota sales dropping after a similar redesign.

Washington grabbed control of dodge and gm, put a twenty man panel in charge. None of which have any auto background. Then let it be known that they want to dump dodge. With that, they firesale the corp. to fiat. Nobody wants to buy a new vehicle from a company that many not be here next year. Now the word in the industry is that fiat will be replacing the entire lineup with fiat replacements as fast as it can. Time to rebuild a classic with efi. Rest in peace, dodge.

You guys are all idiots. The deal with Fiat was in the works before the bankruptcy. Expect Fiat to take a bigger role in how the company is run. The current Dakota is not a competitive vehicle, it costs more than a full size truck, and gets mileage thats just as poor. I wouldn't be surprised if it was replaced with a more "euro" diesel vehicle.

Well it became a useless truck anyway; so if they couldn't make it a real truck then just make them all a classic like the Plymonth brand.

I would be more than happy to buy one (unibody or not)if, they make on with a diesal option. I think the 4.5L ISB Cummins diesal would still be a very nice offering in both; power and, fuel economy.

Cummins is too big and heavy, anything like that would probably have one of Fiat's small diesels. Look for Cummins to go away as Fiat pushes to use their engine line.

i dont think fiat makes a diesel that be sufficient to power a dakota, not to the likings of americans anyway

i think Fiat is going to learn very quickly, and the hard wahy that amricans dont want tiny a$sed cars
ther eis a market, but still, even with gas prices high pickups and suvs still move

also, the people who moved away from pickups and suvs didnt not go to 40 mpg hybrids, they went to full size sedans

the average commute in Europe is what, a few miles, and they have public transit infrastructure where you dont need to drive much
we dont so we spend more time in our vehicles

there are so many differences in american style, american needsm and what americans want to even compare Europe to America

I don't think even Fiat is that crazy; to push there engine into the Ram or, even future products like a possible diesel powered Durango/Dakota. Cummins has developed a smaller, lighter engine block based on a V design. I even presume it would be based off of graphite material just like the upcoming in house built PowerStroke diesel.

I think this idea that Americans "need" certain types of vehicles is not only a little arrogant, but a little out of date. The idea that you can only sell trucks and SUV's with big V-8s that get 12-14 mpg is ridiculous. And you're wrong, these vehicles AREN'T moving anymore. I don't know a single person who's bought a big truck or SUV lately at all. Chrysler desperately needs small efficient cars to get some business back, and they desperately need some better ideas for midsize SUVs and commercial vans, before they are locked out of the market entirely. Ford is bringing over the Transit and Transit Connect, and I predict these are going to be a big hit. Fiat does have diesels that will work in larger trucks, they make large commercial trucks in Europe, for cripes sake. They have a 3 liter v6 turbodiesel that would work very well in a Dakota-sized vehicle. I'm not convinced that diesels are all that important, however, they just aren't popular in this market. Mercedes had to offer a Sprinter with a gas option to pick up sales here, because most US customers don't want to put up with the rattlng and fumes from a diesel.

Not all Americans "need" a truck period. But for the guy that pumps concrete for a living, power is definitely a need, I cant tell you how many toyota tundras roll past me on the road without so much as a scratch on em....no tool box nothing in the bed of the truck at all,not even a trailer hitch, i would say these ponies dont "need" a truck either, but i dont want someone dictating to me what horsepower i do need for my work trucks, i know what i need, and when it come to making horsepower or torque i think the diesels are tough to beat. Theres a large workforce out there that need trucks...nothing else will do and they will not take to the euro style truck that easily. So i would not be so quick to call Super Bee arrogant.
