I have a 1993 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2 magnum v8 and I am having a heck of a time getting the right fuel pump for it. I got one from auto zone for the truck and it was completely different. So I put it in and my gas gauge was going crazy everytime I would hit the gas and brake. So needless to say I took that one out and end up putting a 93 ramcharger fuel pump in it cuz it matched up to the original one I pulled out. But my gas gauge is still doing the samething. Its becoming a pain in the butt. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem please.

The pump has to be set in a certain way
most have lines to use for proper direction

Mine did the same thing. So there could be either a short or it needs to be reset.

Explain, does it move quite a lot?

I think the problem is that you did not index the fuel gage in the replacement in the same direction as the original.

In the Dak, the fuel gages are usually positioned so the float points to either side of the tank. If the float is pointing either to the front or rear of the tank it will move excessively when taking off or brakeing.

How do I know what direction to face the pump in. I put the new one in the same way the old one came out.

So the float needs to face the side of the tank?

I coukld be mistaken. Not sure about a '93. Looking at an FSM for the '01, there is an arrow on the fuel pump module and aligning marks on the tank. You may want to pick up a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual for your truck to make sure.
