My truck has a similar problem. I have a 95 dodge dakota with a v6 and 5 speed.

During the first 10 minutes of running it quite often dies. Almost like someone shut off the ignition. No sputtering or anything, just dead.

I don't think it's the actual ignition switch on the steering column cause the radio and everything else work fine when it dies.

It's never happened on long trips or anything like that, it only seems to happen if i leave it idle in the driveway or soon after I take off.

If I try to start it back up, the truck only turns over but doesn't fire. I have to wait about 5 minutes with the ignition off and then try again.

Normally that has worked everytime, but today within seconds of starting up, the truck died and wouldnt' start back up. I tried for over an hour. Came back 8 hours later I went out to try and it started right up only to die 5 minutes later. It wouldnt' restart and I havent tried since.

Any suggestions?

Forgot to mention, the truck runs just fine with no misses and no power loss. I'm getting 20 miles to the gallon with 150K miles on the motor so I don't think it's the motor itself.

I would start with the easy stuff, like the distributor cap area. If it is old it can be capturing condensation when it cools after driving. A bit of condensation in their can be a real pain until the engine has warmed and it has dissipated (about 5 to 10 minutes run time). It also could have just a bit of corrosion on the contact points of the cap or the end of the rotor bug.

I wonder if it might not be the ignition coil. I'm going to replace it first, then try the spark plug wires n distributer cap/arm if that fails to fix it.

the fact that it instantly dies makes me think that it's losing spark somewhere. I would think the distributer having a bad point or a little condensation in it would cause it to sputter before dying. I could be wrong though.

thanks for the input though. Condensation would seem to be a good candidate as it only happens within the first 10 mins of starting and has to wait a while before it will restart.

A weak coil will usually get it started and let it run at idle, but will not supply an increased spark to support the higher rpms. It will die when you apply throttle and get worse as the coil warms up. In general, the old style coils rarely go bad. If you have access to a 'spare' or can borrow one from another vehicle, then I might try it, but I wouldn't go buy one for troubleshooting. I did this back in the 80s (dating myself) and still have that coil, as that was not my problem after all.

As vehicles age these kind of malfunctions pop up and can be a pain to figure out. My `95 has had the Alt. gauge needle just fall to the way-side while driving down the road, only to work fine the next time I start it back up! I'm sure it is a connection problem in the dash as the last time it happened I smacked the dash above it and the gauge started working again...hasn't quit since then.

Have you tried cycling the ignition key several (three) times and count how many times the check engine light flashes? It may have stored a code. If it flashes sequences of five (flashes five times, pauses flashes five times, etc.) three times there are no codes stored. If the count is different, i.e.: two, two, four, then it has stored a code. It may lead to something that is contributing? To clear any stored codes, you can disconnect the NEGATIVE side of the battery for a minute. Once you have done this, it may stall on you the 1st couple of times you try and start or drive your rig. This is the 'computer' re-setting itself. It usually stops by the 3rd or 4th time. You can also clear codes by disconnecting the positive side, but if you do, you will have to reset your clock and any radio pre-sets. Hope this helps. Good luck in your troubleshootings.

also could be vaccuum leak.

could also be bad ground. put an inline spark tester on the coil and see if you lose spark.

does it always start? or do you also have no start conditions?

I used to have a problem like that, it would just up and die but it didn't care if idling or running down the roiad, also came along with backfiring, wound up being crankshaft position sensor

oellrichm may be on to something. My truck backfires a little when shifting gears and when I'm slowing down while still in gear. I'll have to look into the crankshaft position sensor. I've taken the distrubitor cap off to check it and it is in pretty bad shape. The points are all corroded and there's black soot behind every point.

Buying a new one in the morning and replacing it along with the arm.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I'll look into the sensor.

Cycling the key on and off doesn't produce any codes. Not even the all clear code. Not sure whats up with that.

OK, after changing the distributor cap, the truck seemed to run great for about 2 weeks. It started dying again, and then my fuel mileage dropped from 22 to about 15. Yesterday I changed my spark plugs, and now my truck is really running crappy.

I changed one plug at a time so I didnt' change the wiring order.

Well tonight, while my truck was running, I went to look under the hood. Before I turned on the flashlight, I noticed some flashing light coming from my distributor cap. There is a bad arc going on somewhere down in there.

Iv yet to change the wires, I'll get on that this weekend. Would this be the problem or could it be the timing or maybe wrong firing order?

I'm not sure the firing order on it but maybe someone here does.

Its a 93 Dakota with the 6cyl engine.

Thanks in advance.

Keith

Fix whatever is causing the arcing, and the problem will likely be cured. It wouldn't run great sometimes with the wrong firing order.

If you could see arcing, change the wires as you stated above you would do. That should take care of the problem.

I think I might have found one if not 'the' problem. I know my engine is 6 cylinder, but I was assuming it's the 3.7 that was put into the truck.

When checking some paperwork, I noticed that the registration says "non-actual miles" for the odometer reading.

I found and downloaded a repair manual for the 93 dakota, and when looking at the ignition section it states "The 3.7L V-6 engine uses 6 dedicated, and individually
fired coil for each spark plug" it also states that the spark plugs are installed "under" each coil and that there are no spark plug wires.

My truck has wires, and there is a coil up front.

Could it be possible that the engine was previously replaced with another similar v6?

I've tried to google pictures of the 3.7 engine, but can't seem to find any.

Since my truck started running crappy only 'after" i changed the spark plugs, i think it could be due to the fact that I bought spark plugs for the 3.7 and my truck may have something different.

The previous owner is not around anymore so I cannot ask him.

Any suggestions?

Actually I may have downloaded a manual for a different year but it was labeled a 93.

Looking around on the internet, I see the v6 was a 3.9Liter.

What you downloaded must have been a mistake, the 3.7 didn't come out until many years after '93. About a dacade. You should use the right plugs for your 3.9; but did you follow up on the previous suggestions to fix the arcing ?
