Subject: 4.7 for my 3.9?
IP: Logged

Message:
I would like to know what all I need to do the swap. I know that my transmission will bolt up and handle the power of the 4.7, being that I have the NV3500HD tranny. I know I will need all new components up front as far as the pulley systems are concerned and a new PCM for it. But will the motor mounts be the same? Am I better off just doing the 5.2 swap? I really like the 4.7's power and fuel economy, but i dont wanna be in too deep with headaches. Im doing a solid axle swap right now so this is my next project. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

I say go for it if you have the cash and time.

Since this engine was one of the options for that truck's year there shouldn't be any fabrication problems that need addressing. You should be able to procure the correct OEM parts (mounts, exhaust, PCM, wire harness, etc.) and "slap" it in.

Since both engines use the same tranny that is one headache you'll not need to address (mounts and driveshaft). The only thing to keep in mind is the V6s came with the 8.25 rear axle, and the V8s came with the 9.25 rear axle. This really shouldn't be a problem because the 2005+ Dakotas came with the 8.25 rear axle on V8 equipped trucks.

I think that a 5.2L engine swap would also be doable from a mechanical point of view. But the sticky point is the last year that engine was offered in a light truck was 2000 in the 4x2 Durango, 1999 was the last year for the Dakota. An engine swap in CA has a requirement (to pass smog) that the replacement engine be the same or newer year as the vehicle. Washington may be the same. You need will to check it out.

What's your left foot doing?

So does that engine have different motor mounts than mine? I always thought they were the same, atleast thats what I gathered from searching other posts. Im not worried about the 8.25 rear axle because I already am doing a dana 44 front and a ford 9" rear to match, its going to be rolling on 37's so I need the extra power.

How about a 5.9L then? Do they bolt up to the same tranny's?

You know what I would do? I would just swap in a 318 Magnum (L.A motor) make it a bit easier than going to there newer higher tech 287 (Jeep engine). Of course knowing me I would boost the power a bit. But even so it still shouldn't hurt the transmission you got behind your 239 V6. After all New Venture transmissions are pretty stought. :)

What is the L.A. motor? I have never heard of it, I mean i know the 5.2 is a 318 but what makes it an L.A. motor? The only other thing im worried about is will the stick shifter be moved back since the engine block is longer? I don't wanna be cutting any holes into my floorboards. Cuz if that moves back I will probably also have to get a shorter driveshaft too?

shifter location should not change. the factory had them all in the same location. the extra 2 cylinders will be forward hence, a shorter fan shroud than with the v6.

Ok, so to me it just looks like its a Pre-Mag engine, am I correct? Anyways, I think the main thing ill have to worry about is getting all of the components for the 4.7 when I get it. Since none of the V6 stuff will mount up front like it would in the 5.2 or 5.9. I just feel like the 4.7 creates enough power, is small enough and light enough where I wont have to switch my coil springs on my new axle. Now its just a matter of finding the motor, I have found a reman engine on craigslist for 2500 that has never been installed or ran in anything, they guy wrecked his durango so he doesn't need it. Not sure if that is a great deal or not. Thanks everyone.

You are correct, STS is a bit mixed up on this. There was an older, larger 318 called a poly motor (polispherical chamber design) - that was replaced by the LA version around the mid '60's - and then when the better magnum heads came into play on that LA 318 bottom end it was generally called a 5.2 magnum. But like Modain, I believe the 4.7 swap should be easier for you, as you will be able to find a 4.7 PCM to interface with the rest of your truck. A 5.2 PCM was never made for that year Dakota; so that would cause problems with dash gauges, etc.
