I have an 01 dakota 4x4 v8. With 4 wheel engaged i am hearing some clanking. In 2 wheel i hear some rattling. Does this sound like the driveshaft? Riverside gear has a aftermarket without the cv for 350. Would it be a wise choice to use it rather than oem?

You should figure out what it is before worrying what to replace it with. Check the CV joints in the front axles as well.

Nobody can help if you don't get your forking hands dirty and crawl under there to see if the u-joints are loose. Give us some more info for christs sake.

Good suggestion. If this is his attitude, it was more help than he deserved.

I posted here hoping someone has had a problem with there front driveshaft and could identify the symtoms. I have gotten my hands dirty and cant seem to locate the problem. The clicking and clanking are coming from the t-case or that end of the driveshaft. I would much rather replace a u joint, but theres not one. What would b the best way to check the 4x4? Do i need to put the whole truck on jackstands?

ok so if the u joints arnt bad ur gonna replace a metal tube for clanking??....bad idea. mechanical stuff is easy to figure out just get Dirty and find it and if you dont find it...Ur not dirty enough. Electrical stuff is the stuff thats a pain in the A$$. sometimes its like chasing a ghost. but really just keep looking youll find it.

Its the driveshaft. The cv end is shot. My next question is can i drive without it? Will i damage the viscous coupler or transfer case?

The new driveshaft is on and the problem is solved. Easy to put on too. I ended up getting it at advanced auto parts for $212 out the door and its not the cv driveshaft either. Its got u joints at both ends. Thanks to all that helped out.

IVE WRITTEN ON HERE BEFORE, I KNOW THIS IS AN OLD THREAD BUT THE WEBSITE WONT LET ME START A NEW THREAD WITHOUT SIGNING UP. IM IN CO, I HAVE PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM WITH MY 02 DODGE DAKOTA SLT 5.9L V8. THE PROBLEM NOW IS THAT IM HEARING A KINDA CHIRPING NOISE COMING FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE FRT TIRE AREA. TIRE WORLD SAID THEY NEED TO REBUILD MY FRT DRIVE SHAFT REAR JOINT, AND I GUESS TURN IT INTO A UJOINT? HE'S CHARGING ME A BUTT LOAD, AND I WAS WONDERING IF THERE IS A BETTER WAY I SHOULD GO ABOUT THIS? I CAN GET THE PARTS (I WORK AT MAACO, SO I GET PRETTY GOOD DEALS) BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT TO GET FOR SURE? ANY IDEAS OR ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THX SO MUCH
